Today’s Connections Hints & Answers For September 30, 2024 (Puzzle #476)

If you want to get the best Connections score today, you may need a little help getting there. It is quite difficult to get a Perfect score at the best of times, and sometimes it just feels like a relief to finish. Today was one of the latter times for us, but we can help you get a better score than we did and finish with a few guesses to spare.

If you want to try a game with a different kind of connection, you will want to play the NYT Tiles puzzle. This puzzle is quite hard to fail altogether, but getting a big score is a little more challenging. Players will have to connect the tiles in the puzzle by examining them layer by layer, as each layer matches another tile. Put them together in order correctly, and you can end the game with a massive bonus score from your long-running streak.

SEPTEMBER 30 #476

A whaley good Connections Categories September 30

If you are looking to score big on Connections today, you will need a few clues to help you do it. Today’s puzzle has some rarely-used words, names that can always be challenging, and seemingly random words that do not look like they should go together. To help you navigate these challenges, we have four clues for you to start with:

  • One category is about how something is prepared.
  • One category is about components of a specific product.
  • One category is about people who have a common pet.
  • One category is about words that have something to do with their pronunciation in common. The words that they connect to. outside of the puzzle are all proper nouns.

If you need more help beyond these hints, we have you covered. Sometimes all it takes is knowing what categories you should be aiming for, as that eliminates a lot of troublesome words and guesses. Because of that, we have each category name listed for you.

COOK WITH HEAT AND WATER

BLANCH

BOIL

POACH

STEAM

While this was certainly not the first category I solved (it was nearly the last), by the time I looked closer at these words, I had deduced that they were about cooking. There are no other real cooking-based words in this puzzle, so I was not sure why they had to add “with heat and water” to the category name, but it is correct. For most people, just deducing that these are all methods of cooking is enough. That being said, I have little experience with how to actually BLANCH or POACH anything, so tips are appreciated!

COMMON PERFUME INGREDIENTS

AMBERGRIS

MUSK

ROSE

VANILLA

I would not have thought of AMBERGRIS first as a perfume ingredient today, but that might be due to living somewhere it is not allowed to be sold or traded. However, it has been used in perfumes for most of history, which not every ingredient could say. ROSE and VANILLA make a lot of sense, given the popularity of rosewater. MUSK is always something I thought was an odd name for something that is supposed to smell good. However, today a synthetic version is mostly used, but it is still valued enough to make this list.

CHARACTERS WITH PET DOGS

CHARLIE

DOROTHY

SHAGGY

WALLACE

This category full of names can stump you if you are unsure why they are all here, especially with SOPHIA lurking around the puzzle as well. However, the link between this group of characters is that they all have a pet dog. DOROTHY has Toto, WALLACE has Gromit, SHAGGY obviously has Scooby-Doo, and CHARLIE has Snoopy. Interestingly, most of these characters are animated, with the main exception being Dorothy. I almost wish they had used Emily instead, so we could have a Clifford reference and kept the animated theme.

CAPITAL CITY HOMOPHONES

KETO

ROAM

SOPHIA

SOUL

I mentioned that SOPHIA could be a potential stumbling block above, but KETO had me scratching my head for a few minutes as well. I kept looking at the cooking words, wondering if they belonged there. However, it is not a way of cooking but rather a diet to adhere to. I kept scanning the words for other names of diets but came up empty. In the end, it was a good thing I solved the rest of the puzzle first because the chances of me connecting that to a capital city were fairly slim.

Other Games Like Connections

Today, our puzzle recommendation is Primel, which is much like Wordle but with numbers. However, you have to specifically guess a prime number, which can be quite tricky if you do not remember the rules. It is, however, an excellent game for people who love figuring out numbers.
