Cosplayers have Batman to thank for their newest costume option. Cosplaying is a favorite pastime for many within the comic book community. However, it’s also an expensive pastime that can feel intimidating and overwhelming because of how much investment the perfect costume can take. Thankfully, the cosplayer on a budget now has the perfect alternative thanks to Batman’s new “casual” look.
Batman #151 by Chip Zdarsky and Mike Hawthorne features the title character sporting a brand-new costume, but one that should be easy to duplicate and pull off for the average cosplayer. In the midst of the Absolute Power event, during which Amanda Waller asserts her power as DC’s newest threat, Batman recruits Catwoman’s help to steal a Mother Box hidden on the island of Okinawa, north of Waller’s base on Gamorra. Batman suggests they go undercover as private military contractors working for Sentryglobe. Once he sheds his disguise of Mr. Blackwell, the end result is the perfect costume.
In a classic quick change, Batman sheds half of his military contractor disguise, appearing in his cowl and displaying his Bat-symbol, but still wearing his white shirt and business-casual pants. Without the cape and other accessories, this half-on costume look would make for the perfect casual cosplay.

Batman’s costume as a disguised military man is simple enough to pull off for any cosplayer who can accessorize using whatever spare clothes lie dormant in their closet. The cowl may be the only “expensive” garment in this ensemble. On average, a decent cowl should cost between $15 and $40 at any online store. That is, if a cosplayer doesn’t opt to just make their own, which is doable, but the least costly and least time-consuming option is to buy an affordable mask elsewhere, especially considering even Batman’s most “casual” looks include him wearing his iconic cowl.
It’s as if this costume is tailor-made for Batman fans who want to cosplay as their favorite character.
All the upper body needs is a basic white button-up shirt. Most people have such a thing in their closet lying around for the sake of a work shirt or for other formal events, for example. Finally, the bottom can be topped off with any pair of pants (ideally, a basic black pair, maybe even a green cargo pair to match the army aesthetic), and then combat boots at the bottom. All are accessories that either already exist in someone’s closet or run cheaply to buy online.

Batman has sported many costumes over the years, to the point that the glass casings in his Batcave are often depicted with several options to choose from. However, the intricate detail that most of these costumes include can often be a challenge for Batman cosplayers to produce themselves, mostly due to money and the detail. That’s why this General Batman look is so refreshing. It’s as if this costume is tailor-made for Batman fans who want to cosplay their favorite character without dipping too deep into their pockets to do so.
