It’s time for the big summer holiday of the year: Independence Day. This year, 4th of July falls on a Monday. As a result, many people will get to enjoy a three day weekend. This is a big federal holiday, so a lot of businesses and services will close for the day. However, many stores will remain open. Some will even have big weekend sales. Independence Day is a Federal Holiday
We have almost on dozen federal holidays each year. Juneteenth and Memorial Day just recently passed. Labor Day is a few months away. But Independence Day, or Fourth of July, is right upon us. Like with other federal holidays, which are also called bank holidays, most government services and offices will close for the day.
What’s Closed on Independence Day 2022?
When you think about what’s open or closed on Fourth of July 2022, assume that banking and professional services will likely close. For example, the following are typically closed on Independence Day:
- Banks
- Stock and bonds markets
- Post office including mail delivery services
- Courthouses
- Social security office, Department of Motor Vehicles and other similar offices
- Professional services like lawyers and doctors offices
- Libraries
- Schools for all ages, even if they’re typically open during the summer months
If you have business to take care of in these sectors then you’ll want to get it done before the end of the day on Friday, July 1, 2022. Otherwise, you’ll probably have to wait until Tuesday, July 5, 2022, when services resume with normal business hours.
What’s Open on 4th of July 2022?
In contrast to those professional and government services and offices, most retail businesses will be open for 4th of July. You can pretty much always count on drug stores, convenience stores, gas stations and most grocery stores to stay open during nearly all holidays. That’s definitely true for 4th of July.
Most retail shopping will be open as well. In fact, a lot of people take advantage of big 4th of July weekend sales, so it’s a good time to shop if you’re looking for summer deals. For example, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Target, and Walmart will all stay open on Independence Day.
The one major exception is Costco. When looking at what’s open and closed on 4th of July 2022, note that Costco has more holiday closures than most other similar stores. THEY WILL BE CLOSED ON Independence Day.
Like most retail stores, restaurants are typically open on 4th of July. If you’re interested in fast food, dining in, or takeout, then you shouldn’t have any problems getting what you need during the long holiday weekend.
Of course, some local restaurants and stores do choose to close for the holiday. You can always call ahead to find out in advance if a store will remain open. In fact, if you need food for a 4th of July barbecue, then you would be wise to plan ahead anyway, right? That said, if you’re in a pinch, you should be able to find a store that’s open.
