Shoresy, Jared Keeso’s spinoff of the beloved Canadian comedy Letterkenny, is riddled with running gags, and none is more important than the show’s refusal to reveal Shoresy’s first name. Throughout Letterkenny, Jared Keeso’s side character known only as ‘Shoresy’ became a fan favorite thanks to his outrageous and hilarious quick-fire insults, typically at the expense of the hockey players Reilly and Jonesy. Shoresy’s popularity led to the mysterious character getting his own spinoff, filled with real-life hockey players and pundits.

While Shoresy did get into Shoresy’s background ever so slightly, many details about the character remained mysterious throughout the show’s three seasons. Shoresy season 3’s ending teased more episodes coming in the future, and with them comes the potential to dig even deeper into Shoresy’s history and what makes Shoresy tick. If Jared Keeso has proven anything with Letterkenny and Shoresy, it’s that he commits to a bit like nobody else. Therefore, there is one bit of information about Shoresy that simply may never be revealed.

Shoresy & Letterkenny Never Reveal Shoresy’s First Name

It’s one of the longest-running gags in the franchise

Despite being featured in many of the 12 seasons of Letterkenny and now three seasons of Shoresy, the audience never learns what Shoresy’s real first name is. Whether it’s Reilly, Jonesy, Liam, or Cory, none of the targets of Shoresy’s mother-insulting rants ever refer to him as anything other than Shoresy. He has always worn number 69 on the back of both his referee uniform and hockey jersey, but neither typically includes his last name, much less his first. His first name is never even revealed to Laura Mohr, the reporter and apparent love of his life.

Interestingly, this is not the first time that Jared Keeso has committed to a bit like this. Throughout all 12 seasons of Letterkenny, Keeso never reveals the last name of his character Wayne, who is the leader of the group known as the “Hicks” in the town of Letterkenny. Keeso plays both Wayne and Shoresy, so keeping the first name of one character and the last name of the other obscured is an entertaining gag that underscores both shows’ irreverent humor.

Only Shoresy’s Family Calls Him A Different Nickname

Shoresy’s large and diverse foster family has a special name for him

Shoresy cries after discussing his future with his family in Shoresy season 3

Shoresy season 1, episode 4 provides the most in-depth look into what makes Shoresy, Shoresy. In that episode, the aging hockey player attends a family reunion, and the audience discovers that Shoresy grew up in a foster home. Shoresy’s current “family” is the diverse array of all of his foster brothers and sisters, along with their foster father (Scott Thompson). It’s revealed that a big part of why Shoresy is so competitive was his desire to keep up with and compete with his older brother Morris, played by Ryan Allen.

Jared Keeso actually played junior hockey in Ontario, which is where his deep love of the sport and the inspiration for the story of Shoresy comes from.

Throughout the episode, Shoresy’s family never uses his real first name, and instead refers to him as “Waffles.” His siblings began calling him Waffles as a child, as a result of him being both overweight and a terrible athlete. It’s important to note that Shoresy’s last name isn’t actually Shoresy; it’s Shore, but was adapted to Shoresy due to many hockey nicknames ending with a “-y” sound. As is the case with everyone else in his life, even Shoresy’s family doesn’t actually use his first name.

Shoresy’s Hidden First Name Replaces The Character’s Old Letterkenny Gag

Shoresy’s face was never revealed in Letterkenny

Jared Keeso as Shoresy in Lettekenny

Part of what made Shoresy so entertaining during his run on Letterkenny was the fact that his face was never shown. Earlier in the show, Shoresy was often hidden in a bathroom stall as he harassed Reilly and Jonesy, and as his role gradually expanded they came up with new and more inventive ways to hide his face. The general understanding was that it was a tongue-in-cheek device to prevent the audience from seeing that Wayne and Shoresy were played by the same actor, show creator Jared Keeso.

Over time however, it grew into part of Shoresy’s charm and the mystique surrounding him. The audience knew that he was a very talented hockey player, relentlessly mean, and seemed to be desirable to women. Shoresy provided the opportunity for Keeso to really expand upon the character and infuse a surprising amount of heart into his story. He inspires his teammates, cares about them a great deal, and is willing to sacrifice his own health for the team’s success. His first name really doesn’t matter to the character, which is why it may never be revealed in Shoresy.
