The Monk spinoff Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie should get a follow-up after the success of the Psych sequel movies. Monk was a detective dramedy that centered on Tony Shalhoub’s titular former detective with OCD. A quirky, uniquely likable protagonist, Monk was the unlikely genius who solved countless crimes via his obsessive attention to detail. Over a decade and a half after the show’s finale aired, 2023’s Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie brought him back for one last hurrah. The spinoff movie was well received, which inevitably prompted calls for Monk 2 to continue the series.
Since Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie’s ending was satisfying and self-contained, there was no immediate need for a follow-up. However, it had been a long time since viewers saw the titular detective in action and Shalhoub’s protagonist remained as lovable as ever. Not only that, but Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie set up a sequel with its ending despite solving its central case. In the era of steaming reboots, it is fair for viewers to expect that the character’s story wouldn’t be quite finished yet. Luckily, another show proves Monk could continue.

The Psych Movies Prove Mr. Monk’s Last Case Should Get A Sequel
Psych’s Transition To Movie Spinoffs Proves More Monk Movies Could Work
Monk was popular throughout its 8-season run between 2002 and 2009, as was Psych during its 8-season run from 2006 until 2014. Monk was a playful, quirky spin on the familiar murder mystery procedural, much like Psych. Psych centered on James Roday’s fake psychic, while Monk focused on Shalhoub’s former detective, but both shows were loved as much for their offbeat sense of humor as their mysteries. As such, Monk could reasonably follow Psych’s formula. Psych has three movie spinoffs and another sequel in the works, proving Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie deserves a follow-up.
Like Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, the Psych movies were standalone outings. Each of these could have worked as the show’s last story if there wasn’t sufficient interest in another follow-up, and this made them all the more popular with fans of the series. Since Monk was a procedural series with some serialized story arcs, it is perfectly suited to copying Psych’s movie plan. The sequel to Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie could follow another case closely connected to Monk’s private life, much like the three Psych movies centered on storylines related to Shawn’s personal relationships.
Will There Ever Be A Monk & Psych Crossover?
Both Monk And Psych Shared A Warm Sense Of Humor
While Psych 4 is already appealing, the sequel could be even better if it was a crossover with Monk. The two shows have a lot in common, with both subverting the murder mystery sub genre thanks to their playful sense of humor. They also both boast sizable supporting casts who could clash hilariously if forced to work together on a particularly tough case. Now that Monk’s first movie has revived the franchise, there is no better time for the series to merge both shows. Thus, Monk’s follow-up to Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie could be a Psych crossover.
