- The possible death of an alternate Wanda in the MCU intensifies the tragic nature of Scarlet Witch’s story.
- The death of Earth-838 Wanda in Agatha All Along could set up a storyline where Billy seeks answers about his mother.
The first trailer for Agatha All Along introduces a dark theory that makes Scarlet Witch’s death more upsetting if true. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness left audiences speculating over the fate of the MCU‘s Wanda Maximoff. While the film implied that she died, viewers still held hope that the Scarlet Witch would return. Unfortunately, those hopes took a heavy blow after the debut of Agatha All Along‘s teaser trailer, when Aubrey Plaza’s character confirmed “that witch is gone.”
If Scarlet Witch is dead, it’s a tragic way to end her story. Wanda survived a traumatic storyline in the MCU, and she only had a brief moment of redemption before sacrificing herself in Doctor Strange 2. She could return as many heroes do in the MCU, but Marvel appears to confirm her harsh fate, adding one more upsetting milestone in Wanda’s story. Her death could be made even more tragic after internet sleuths noticed an important detail in the Agatha trailer that sets up a grim, morbid theory.

The new trailer for Agatha All Along introduces a very exciting means to potentially bring Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch back from the dead.
MCU Theory: Agatha All Along Is Teasing A Different Wanda’s Death
The trailer for Agatha All Along begins with Agatha as a detective investigating a dead body. It’s unknown who the dead body is, but while in the morgue, the name W. Maximoff appears on a card with multiple dates. In an article from Variety, the outlet confirmed that Agatha is “investigating Wanda’s dead body.” However, this can’t be the same Wanda, as she was in her Scarlet Witch costume when she died, and is presumed to be buried under the Darkhold Castle ruins on Mount Wundagore.
According to the theory, the body could be Earth-838 Wanda, the variant in Doctor Strange 2 who protects her kids from Earth-616 Wanda after she travels through the multiverse. The blue sweater and jeans on the dead body resemble what 838 Wanda wore during Doctor Strange 2‘s climax. This Wanda variant was presumably still alive at the film’s end, but this could indicate that she was killed shortly after.
How This MCU Theory Makes Scarlet Witch’s Death Even More Tragic
Wanda’s decision to sacrifice herself came after visiting this variant of herself and her kids. After seeing the horrified faces of 838 Wanda and her kids, 616 Wanda decides to spare the other, realizing that this family is real, and she shouldn’t destroy it for her own selfish reasons. By destroying the temple, she ensures no one is tempted by the Darkhold again, and 838 Wanda can remain the true mother of her children.
If it’s true that 838 Wanda is dead, it dilutes some of 616 Wanda’s sacrifice, but it also creates a horrible reality for the alternate family. Scarlet Witch giving up on her goal to find a new family is meaningless since the alternate Wanda dies anyway, and 838 Billy and Tommy no longer have a mother. Another Wanda is now dead, and it removes the impact of her honorable sacrifice. However, it could lead to an important storyline in Agatha All Along if speculation regarding one character’s identity is accurate.
How Wanda 838’s Death Could Set Up Scarlet Witch’s Return
Besides Agatha, the identities of the cast members in this show are mostly being kept under wraps. After the first trailer, there are theories that Joe Locke could be playing Billy Kaplan, one of Wanda’s twins. Since 616 Wanda’s kids disappeared during Wandavision‘s finale, Locke’s version could be a variant from another universe or some bizarre reincarnation of the MCU’s version. If it is a variant, Billy could be the version from Earth-838, who is now looking for answers regarding his mother’s mysterious death.
Since he already met a variant of his mother, he could be looking for answers, and working with Agatha, since she has crossed paths with the Scarlet Witch before. The pair is traveling down the Witches’ Road, a magical plane filled with danger and mystery. It’s possible that Wanda teleported here after sacrificing herself, and Billy could seek her out to find out answers about his mother, or to see a version of his mother again. This is still a theory, but it will make Wanda’s ending even more tragic if Agatha All Along goes in this direction.
