Today’s Connections Hints & Answers For August 9, 2024 (Puzzle #424)

You do not want your Connections streak to go MIA just because you missed a single category. That’s a frustrating feeling, and we have all the help you need to make sure that doesn’t happen. If you want to keep that streak alive as opposed to being annoyed that you missed that subtle answer that was a red herring for a different category entirely. We are here to help you do so.

If you want an extra challenge, we suggest checking out the NYT Letter Boxed puzzle, which is one of the most difficult daily puzzles to figure out when you first try it out. However, once you get the hang of it, it becomes challenging but not overbearing and you can enjoy your time selecting what letters you should put to make new words. This is a great puzzle for those who like visual puzzles, as you have to move from letter-to-letter around a box.

Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained

NOT PRESENT

ABSENT

ELSEWHERE

GONE

MIA

If you are not present, you are, in fact ABSENT. You can be ELSEWHERE, making people think you have GONE MIA. Sometimes it is fun to see how words that do mean the same thing are often used together despite that. Gone and MIA is a good example of this, and it is interesting in the context of how the puzzle works. JAM and PACK in a recent puzzle also had that same feeling, as I feel they are used together more often than they are used apart, at least in certain dialects.

SUPPORTER

ADVOCATE

CHAMPION

CHEERLEADER

EXPONENT

This is where things might be a little confusing, as CHEERLEADER could easily fit with words in later categories to mean more of a high school stereotype. However, in this context, these words are all about how to support, or ADVOCATE, for something or someone else.

CHAMPION is a word with a dual meaning that could also be confusing here, but not as much as the other. EXPONENT is also not a word I would have used in this way, but that is often the case with these kinds of words in the Connections puzzle.

Blue Answers: Revealed & Explained

ROCK GENRES

GLAM

GOTH

METAL

PUNK

Here, GOTH is probably the most obvious example of what could have gone with cheerleader, but so could PUNK. However, if you take a step back and look at the words, thinking about it in a musical sense does click.

However, it still astounds me sometimes when I think about the fact that there are likely just as many rock genres as there are genres of music in general. It does explain why everyone in my life will answer with a different band if asked who their favorite rock band is though.

SHOCK ___

HORROR

JOCK

VALUE

WAVE

Shock VALUE and Shock WAVE are likely the best examples here and the ones that most people will recognize right away. SHOCK horror also has some cultural sense, but usually, the point of the horror genre is to be shocking.

I had never heard of a shock JOCK before, so that was a new one and I was a little worried about googling it. Not to worry, however, I carefully did so you do not have to and it is simply a radio DJ that says shocking things, truly astounding.
