Today’s Connections Hints & Answers For August 18, 2024 (Puzzle #433)

Today’s Connections puzzle was a little tricky and had us scratching our heads sometimes, so it is possible that you are here for the same reason. Today, there are some odd references, and the last category is tricky because of how they chose to represent the words. However, there is no reason you cannot complete this puzzle without failing it, so you can rest easy knowing we have all the tips you need.

If you want a different type of puzzle, you can check out the NYT Letter Boxed puzzle, which uses letters to form words but with the parameters that you have to cycle around the square shape. A fair amount of challenges arise when solving these puzzles, and they can be a lot of fun once you get into the rhythm of it.

Today’s Connections Category Hints

AUGUST 18 #433

Time for Connections Categories August 18

If you need some clarity on what the categories might be, you can check out a few hints to help you get started:

  • One category is not about time but is rather time-adjacent
  • One category is about the hypothetical
  • One category is about something you can find in the checkout line
  • One category is about names but missing something

Knowing the categories is half the battle in Connections, and sometimes I wish I knew what they were ahead of time. Particularly on this puzzle, it might have saved my bacon. Here are the names:

Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained

ALARM CLOCK BUTTONS

ALARM

HOUR

SNOOZE

TIME SET

There are many time-adjacent words that these could be related to, but perhaps the two biggest clues are SNOOZE and TIME SET. SLEEP is a possibility, but less likely than the others on this list. ALARM and HOUR are a little more generic, and as many people mainly use phones as alarms now, they can be a little tricky to get right.

“HERE’S A THOUGHT…”

PERHAPS

SAY

SUPPOSE

WHAT IF

Entering the realm of the hypothetical could be as dangerous as The Twilight Zone or as easy as venturing into this question. In this case, the hypotheticals are all combined to make a real category. In other situations, these four words might be extremely dangerous. However, sometimes, these are the right words to use and can lead to big possibilities and dreams coming true.

Blue Answers: Revealed & Explained

CANDY PIECES

KISS

NERD

RUNT

WHOPPER

WHOPPER makes sense, and KISS can be used in the singular when it follows the brand name, but NERD and RUNT are almost never used in the singular, and that threw me for a loop. Luckily, it was not a long loop, but I still wasn’t sure why these things were grouped until I saw the category name. I will say I am a sucker for Nerds candy, particularly the gummy clusters that are absolutely addicting.

SEVEN DWARFS MINUS LAST LETTER

DO

DOPE

GRUMP

SLEEP

It turns out that recognizing the classic Seven Dwarfs without the last letter is quite difficult. Especially when SLEEP can fairly easily be pictured with ALARM, the other three have other meanings beyond the names. It is much easier to see how they go together now, but I was a little confused going into this one. I could have sworn DO-C had another name, but apparently, I might actually be crazy, so that’s something.

Other Games Like Connections

Once you have finished googling all the names of the various dwarfs and learning that, apparently, nearly nine other dwarfs were cut from the film (for good reason), you might find yourself itching to do another puzzle. If you are, we have quite the selection down below, and for our recommendation Hello Wordl is a fun variant of the more popular game that gives an added dimension.
