Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero – How To Beat Great Ape Vegeta (Boss Guide)

As you play through the end of the Saiyan arc in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, you will have to beat Great Ape Vegeta, a tough boss who challenges what you’ve learned. Unlike other opponents, many of your go-to strategies can’t defeat this giant enemy. You have to approach this fight differently than you may be used to if you want to overcome this challenge.

Great Ape Vegeta is one of the few giant enemies you may see among the many characters in DB: Sparking! Zero. This type of fighter has certain strengths and weaknesses that set it apart from standard characters available in the game’s massive roster. With incredibly powerful attacks, this boss character can easily wipe you out with a few strikes before you can react.

How To Battle Great Ape Vegeta

Don’t Rely On Normal Tactics

The greatest power Great Ape Vegeta has is its extraordinary defenses, which can’t be disrupted like a normal fighter’s. For example, if you try to attack the Great Ape head-on, you will likely get knocked out before you deal any significant damage. One punch from the Great Ape will tear through your health, meaning that the boss can always dish out more punishment to you in a close-quarters brawl.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero Slammed By Players For Gruelling Difficulty

The early access release of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero causes an uproar in the community as players believe certain battles are too difficult.

You encounter Great Ape Vegeta during Goku’s Saga, essentially the story mode for the character. The Episode Battle called “Vegeta’s Secret Maneuver” features this fight right after you battle against Vegeta in his normal form. This transformation in DB: Sparking! Zero is the first of its kind, making it difficult for some players to adjust when they haven’t met an opponent like the Great Ape before.

Some other giant fighters you can practice against to do better in this boss fight include Janemba and Hirudegarn, who you can face in self-contained battles against the computer to get experience against these types of characters.

If you are truly struggling against Great Ape Vegeta, you can lower the difficulty of the fight when selecting the Episode Battle. When choosing the Chapter of Goku’s Saga, select the prompt at stage select that allows you to lower difficulty. You don’t have to win this battle on a higher difficulty to unlock anything, so there are no penalties for beating it under easier circumstances.

Tips For Beating Great Ape Vegeta

Keep Your Distance And Fire Beam Attacks

The biggest mistake you can make while fighting Great Ape Vegeta is trying to fight him up close. Keep your distance from the boss as often as you can since many of the Great Ape’s strongest attacks are its punches and grab. One grab could take out half your health if you are caught near it, so take the time to escape whenever you get a chance.

This strategy is immediately important as Great Ape Vegeta will start the fight by using a Galick Gun beam attack that can be difficult to dodge. Do not charge the boss or use rush attacks to try and break through its hefty defenses. Going in right away is a recipe for disaster as the Great Ape can easily break your stance and land free hits to knock you out fast.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero Review – A Near-Perfect Love Letter To An Iconic Franchise

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is set to release this week, and overall, it’s a stunning return to the Budokai Tenkaichi franchise after almost 20 years.

Try to use the environment to your advantage. Hiding behind cliffs and rocks in the boss arena will block some of Great Ape Vegeta’s projectiles from time to time. Although this does limit what ranged attacks you can use as well, you will always be much faster than the Great Ape to reposition yourself if necessary.

An effective plan after dodging the first blast of Great Ape Vegeta is to fall back and charge your Ki. When you get into Sparking, your attacks cannot be blocked by the boss, allowing you to easily break their stance in a few strikes. Once you find the right moment between the Great Ape’s projectile blasts and physical strikes, launch a precise series of attacks of your own to knock them onto the ground.

One of the best times to attack Great Ape Vegeta is when you dodge a projectile blast done after the game shows a close-up shot of the boss. Firing a beam attack on the exposed boss’ side deals incredible damage.

No wish from Shenron in DB: Sparking! Zero will give you more of a perfect opportunity to fight back when Great Ape Vegeta is knocked down. Landing a basic attack chain in Sparking will give you enough resources to fire a Kamehameha beam onto the boss, vastly draining its health. When your Sparking runs out, flee again and charge back up to repeat the process until the boss doesn’t have any health left.

You may want to spend skill points on the Kaioken technique before this boss fight, as it can power up your attacks when you enter Sparking. As you can see in the above video by YouTube creator Silver Mont, the stronger the projectiles you use against Great Ape Vegeta, the more damage you will deal. With enough normal ki blasts and Kamehameha beams, you should come out on top eventually.

What Do You Get For Winning?

Make Progress Toward New Characters

Your main reward for defeating Great Ape Vegeta is continued progress through Goku’s Saga, leading to more Chapters and fights to complete. Finishing Goku’s Saga will automatically unlock new fighters, either to your roster directly or in the Shop. Some of the in-game currency called Zeni you earn from this boss fight can be spent on new characters you want to unlock from that same Shop.

Completing the fight against Great Ape Vegeta concludes the Saiyan Saga of Goku’s story mode. The following arc, the Namek Saga, will have plenty of challenging boss fights for you to overcome as well.

You also gain plenty of Player Level EXP for defeating Great Ape Vegeta, possibly even giving you a level up in the process. Those who reach Player Level 10 unlock more fighters in the Shop, but anyone who grinds to Level 20 will gain access to some of the rarest characters in the game. Both Fused Zamasu and Goku Black are locked behind this Player Level achievement unless you use a wish with Super Shenron.

Those looking to grind this fight once they understand it can try to beat it again and again for some more XP. While this may not be the easiest fight to grind rewards from in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, it can be extremely easy to beat when you figure out how to utilize the most effective strategy against Great Ape Vegeta.
