Ghost of Tsushima tells a heartfelt story about the lengths someone will go to in order to save the ones they love, even if it breaks their moral and honor-bound code. Ghost of Yotei’s story will likely explore similar themes, albeit with an entirely new cast, in a new time period, and all while carving its own unique path. However, while it should undoubtedly avoid the pitfalls of repeating the story beats of its predecessor, Ghost of Yotei should borrow some elements, notably one in particular that helped give a lot of credence to Tsushima’s emphasis on belief and legends.
Ghost of Tsushima was easily one of the best PS4 exclusives and remains an incredible PS5 title, but Ghost of Yotei could surpass it, especially if it improves upon its fundamental mechanics, and introduces new elements. One area that could perhaps do with a little improvement is the narrative, which, in Ghost of Tsushima, railroaded players in a certain direction despite the gameplay promising freedom of choice. Ghost of Yotei’s story could change all of that, but regardless of whether it does or not, including this one small detail could make it an incredibly memorable time.
Ghost Of Yotei Needs To Include Mythic Tales
They Help Add A Fantasical Element To An Otherwise Grounded Universe
Mythic Tales in Ghost of Tsushima served as not just a fun way of unlocking rare armor sets or new abilities, but also to weave the more mythological elements of Japanese culture into the extremely grounded story. While the Legends mode would go on to heighten this side of Ghost of Tsushima, the Mythic Tales offered just the right amount of storytelling needed to further flesh out the ways people in 13th Century Japan saw the world. These stories spoke of unkillable ronin or armor that could deflect any blow, which made Jin’s journey to becoming the Ghost more believable.
These Mythic Tales are some of the best side quests in Ghost of Tsushima, despite there only being a handful of them, largely thanks to their longer runtime and greater level of depth. So, it’s a no-brainer to feel that Ghost of Yotei should implement Mythic Tales as well, especially if its protagonist, Atsu, goes on a similar journey of self-discovery and eventually ascends to the legendary status of Ghost. They’re also just novel ways of telling existing folk tales from that region – or at the least making up new ones – which helps to make it feel rich with history.

Alongside its enthralling gameplay, Ghost of Tsushima is celebrated for its cast of characters, many of whom deliver incredible lines of dialogue.
Ghost of Yotei could even embrace the mythological side to a greater extent than Ghost of Tsushima ever did, perhaps not by literally incorporating mythological creatures, but by centering around the fear and belief in Oni and other similar horrifying creatures. It’s also possible that Ghost of Yotei starts with Atsu already as the titular Ghost, with people fearing her very existence and making up Mythic Tales about her. It could even be that one of the Mythic Tales is about the Ghost Atsu has become, and her dealing with the way the world perceives her.
There Should Be A Jin Sakai Mythic Tale
Players Could Hear The Tale Of The Legendary Ghost
One of Ghost of Yotei’s controversial changes from Tsushima is that it pivots away from the original’s protagonist in favor of a new protagonist and a different time period, being set almost 400 years after the first game. This really isn’t an issue, especially as Ghost of Tsushima leaves Jin’s story largely concluded beyond the fact that he finally embraces his Ghost persona. However, Ghost of Yotei could still incorporate him by having his legend be told through a Mythic Tale, one in which players go on the hunt for the legendary Ghost armor he wears in Ghost of Tsushima.
Having a mission in which Atsu learns about this ten-foot tall demon with glowing eyes that saved the island of Tsushima single-handedly from the invading Mongol forces definitely sounds like a Mythic Tale that could have appeared in Ghost of Tsushima. Atsu could either go along with it, or, especially if there are many paralels between Tsushima and Yotei, could comment on how unbelievable the whole story is. Either way, it would be a great way to pay homage to Jin and his story.

Although Ghost of Tsushima tried to paint an accurate picture of feudal life in Japan in the 11th century, not all its characters are authentic.
The reward would naturally be Jin’s Ghost armor from Ghost of Tsushima, or perhaps his Ghost ability that sees him strike fear into the hearts of any enemy nearby, making them instantly killable. There are plenty of options that Sucker Punch could go in, so long as this is the way it wants to remember Jin. Of course, there’s absolutely the possibility that Jin won’t be mentioned at all, especially considering the time difference.
Ghost Of Yotei Could Ignore Jin Sakai Altogether
It Is Set 400 Years After The First Game
Ghost of Yotei doesn’t really need to mention Jin at all. This isn’t just because it’s set almost 400 years later, but also because Jin’s story is fairly unremarkable when put into perspective of everything that happened between when he saved Tsushima and when Ghost of Yotei takes place. Additionally, geographically, the two locations, Hokkaidō and Tsushima, are at practically different ends of the country, and as the Mongols never conquered Tsushima – at least in the Ghost timeline – it likely had a less significant impact on Japanese history as it did in reality.
In real life, during the first invasion attempt – which

takes a lot of inspiration from
– the Mongols did successfully take Tsushima from the defending force, then moved onto Iki Island and Kyūshū before finally retreating. They then invaded for a second time and succeeded, taking several more islands and even attempting to invade the mainland, before being wiped out by a typhoon.
The only real reason Jin would be mentioned is if Atsu is somehow related to Jin, if the Ghost name is passed down to different people like Zoro, or for pure fanservice reasons. However, if Ghost of Yotei wants to distance itself from Ghost of Tsushima, then there’s a good chance he won’t be mentioned at all. While that may be disappointing to some, it’s fairly refreshing, especially as it allows those who maybe missed Ghost of Tsushima to jump in without prior knowledge.
Ghost of Yotei has plenty of options when it comes to including Jin, but regardless of whether it does, including the Mythic Tales will absolutely help improve its overall narrative. They served such an important purpose in the original game, not just to give players cool armor and tell folk tales, but also to give parallels to the very journey Jin was embarking upon. Ghost of Yotei should definitely include some form of Mythic Tales from Ghost of Tsushima, even if their format is adapted to suit its story better, and hopefully one of them will focus on the original Ghost.
