Miss Scarlet And The Duke Season 5: Everything We Know

The Victorian period drama Miss Scarlet has already stirred up quite a few mysteries across its first four seasons, and now it has been renewed for season 5. Premiering in 2020, the show follows Eliza Scarlet as she inherits her late father’s detective agency and teams up with seasoned Scotland Yard veteran William “The Duke” Wellington to crack cases. Putting a clever spin on the age-old detective tropes, Miss Scarlet analyzes the Victorian era through a modern lens and explores issues like gender and sexuality while still delivering compelling mysteries.

Though the series has all the visual appeal of the most opulent period dramas, the greatest strength of Miss Scarlet has always been its characters and its cozy atmosphere. The cozy British murder mystery series is nothing new, but Miss Scarlet adds plenty of visual interest while also going a fair bit deeper than the usual whodunnit when it comes to exploring contemporary social issues. The easy nature of the show has made it possible to renew it for additional seasons, with season 5 promising to continue that trend.

Miss Scarlet Season 5 Cast

Many Returns & One Big Departure

Though shows like Miss Scarlet utilize a revolving cast of guest characters, the main cast of the series has remained largely consistent since the first episode. However, Miss Scarlet season 5 will see a major shakeup in its ensemble as Stuart Martin has announced he will not return as his beloved character, William “The Duke” Wellington. Despite that shocking departure, Kate Phillips is confirmed to return to the lead role, and she will once again play the intrepid detective, Miss Scarlet. To replace Martin’s “The Duke”, Tom Durant Pritchard has been cast as Scotland Yard detective Alexander Blake.

Because of Martin’s departure, season 5 has been renamed to simply

Miss Scarlet Season 5 Story

Miss Scarlet Gets A New Partner

It is unclear exactly what will happen in Miss Scarlet season 5, and the closing moments of season 4 didn’t offer much in the way of clues. Season 4 saw the duo split up as Eliza accepts a job offer at Nash & Sons, but William eventually professes his love for Eliza. William was then absent from the final two episodes, and their love story was put on the backburner as she solved a case involving Nash.

PBS revealed a synopsis for season 5 which reads:

In the new season, Eliza’s agency is thriving and her professional life is on a successful path. On the personal side, however, Duke has now been away in New York for several months and Eliza is forced to make a difficult decision. Meanwhile, a new Detective Inspector comes to Scotland Yard and Eliza must navigate building a relationship with him if she’s going to continue having access to police resources. All these changes and decisions beg the question: Can Eliza Scarlet have it all?

Unfortunately, Stuart Martin’s departure from the series is seemingly going to rob fans of any chance for closure regarding the William and Eliza love plot, which leaves season 5 somewhat open-ended. However, the introduction of Tom Durant Pritchard’s Alexander Blake will certainly shake things up, and the hardened detective is likely going to butt heads with the strong-willed Eliza. No longer Miss Scarlet and The Duke, Miss Scarlet season 5 has a blank slate to work with.
