Software Companies Interview Series: Incomedia

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Stefano Polacchini, Digital Marketing Manager and Expert in Online Marketing and AI of Incomedia. This company is renowned for its dedication to making web creation accessible to everyone. Since its inception in 1998, Incomedia has developed innovative solutions like WebSite X5, empowering users across over 120 countries to effortlessly create professional websites.

Join us as we explore this company’s inspiring journey and the key milestones that have shaped its success.

Q1: Can you provide a brief overview of Incomedia’s history? How did the company originate, and what key milestones have contributed to its growth and success?

Incomedia was founded in 1998 by two brothers, Federico and Stefano Ranfagni, who shared a deep passion for technology and a strong belief that it should always serve people. The turning point came in 2000 when a friend, with no programming experience, asked for help in creating a website. This request sparked the idea behind WebSite X5, a software designed to enable anyone, regardless of technical expertise, to create a professional website in just five steps.

Since then, WebSite X5 has grown to be an intuitive yet comprehensive tool, used globally in over 120 countries. The software is available in 21 languages, and according to Builtwith.com, over 273,000 websites have been created using WebSite X5. In the “simple website builder” category, it ranks 3rd best in Italy, 9th in Germany, and 15th worldwide.

Q2: What were some of the primary challenges and opportunities that Incomedia faced during its growth journey? How did the company overcome these challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities?

One of the key challenges Incomedia faced during its growth journey was the complexity of international expansion. Reaching users in over 120 countries required significant effort in adapting our approach to support various local markets, particularly when it came to purchasing processes, tax compliance, and billing for international customers. To overcome these challenges, partnering with a global provider like 2Checkout (now Verifone) played a crucial role. Verifone helped us streamline and simplify the purchasing experience for our users worldwide, ensuring compliance and efficient billing processes.

On the other hand, opportunities emerged with the growing trend of democratizing web content creation, and Incomedia has capitalized on this by continually enhancing WebSite X5 to make it even more accessible for non-technical users. A recent example is the integration of MagicText, our AI-powered solution that helps users generate high-quality content for their websites effortlessly. Looking ahead, we face the challenge and opportunity of further integrating AI solutions into our software, providing even more powerful tools that simplify the website creation process and enhance the user experience.

Q3: What sets Incomedia’s solutions apart from its competitors in the multimedia software industry? How does the company differentiate itself in terms of features, functionality, or value proposition?

Incomedia’s flagship product, WebSite X5, stands out from its competitors in several key ways. Our core value proposition can be summarized in three main points: unlimited websites, no subscription fees, and complete ownership. Unlike many cloud-based solutions that require ongoing subscriptions, WebSite X5 is an on-premise desktop software, which means that users pay once and gain the ability to create unlimited websites directly on their PC, without any recurring fees. This “yours forever” approach ensures that users have full control over their websites, owning them outright rather than being tied to a rental-like model.

In addition, WebSite X5 does not take any percentage or fees from eCommerce transactions, unlike many of our competitors, allowing users to maximize their profits. The desktop nature of the software also offers distinct advantages: users can work offline or on the go, and they have the flexibility to make local edits to their site before publishing it when they are fully satisfied with the outcome. This flexibility and control are what set WebSite X5 apart, providing a solution that is not only cost-effective but also empowering for users looking to create and manage their digital presence without limitations.

Q4: Can you share any interesting stories or examples of how clients have successfully implemented your solutions to address specific challenges?

WebSite X5 has been instrumental in helping a wide range of clients achieve their goals, from eCommerce start-ups to event organizers and artisans. For instance:

  • R&A SHOP, started by two sisters, leveraged WebSite X5 to create an online clothing store, growing their business from a local shop to an eCommerce platform that reaches a broader audience.
  • Premobil, a furniture company, rebuilt their website in just three days with the software’s easy-to-use templates, enhancing their online visibility.
  • Bologna Mineral Show used WebSite X5 to create a website for their mineral exhibition, which helped increase event attendance by improving its online presence.
  • Edo Sartori, a luthier, expanded his handcrafted instrument business internationally using a website created with WebSite X5, reaching clients even in Taiwan.

These examples illustrate the versatility of WebSite X5, which can be used to create eCommerce platforms, promote events, or build a global online presence, regardless of the user’s technical expertise.

Q5: Looking ahead, what strategic goals or initiatives are you excited about for the future of Incomedia?

At Incomedia, we are particularly excited about our plans to further enhance the AI capabilities within our software, such as MagicText, to provide even more support to users during website creation. Additionally, we are focused on expanding the eCommerce functionalities of WebSite X5, making it a stronger alternative to larger players in the market. We are also exploring new opportunities in emerging markets, particularly in the Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, and Africa, by developing relationships with commercial partners to increase our presence in these regions.

Q6: What role do you believe customer feedback plays in shaping your product development and service offerings?

Customer feedback plays a crucial role in shaping both our product development and the services we offer. Many of the new features we’ve integrated into WebSite X5 are a direct result of requests and suggestions from our users. While we can’t always accommodate every specific request, particularly those tailored to individual needs, we take customer input very seriously. We primarily gather feedback through our community and customer support channels, ensuring it reaches the product team to help refine and enhance the user experience.

Q7: If you could share one insight or lesson learned throughout your company’s journey, what would it be?

One of the most important lessons we’ve learned at Incomedia is the value of putting people first. We believe that prioritizing personal and family well-being over business profit is crucial for creating a healthy and productive company culture. This approach has not only fostered a positive work environment but has also contributed to the long-term success of our team and our products. By focusing on people, whether employees or customers, we’ve been able to grow sustainably and foster strong, supportive relationships.

Q8: What motivated the decision to partner with 2Checkout, and how has this partnership influenced your operational efficiency and customer experience?

Our decision to partner with 2Checkout (now Verifone) was primarily driven by the need to simplify purchasing processes, ensure tax compliance, and streamline international billing for our customers. Over time, we have also greatly appreciated their consistent support and proactive suggestions to optimize our purchasing processes, conversion rate, and average order value. Lastly, we would like to give special recognition to our client support manager, who has been incredibly present, proactive, and supportive throughout our journey.

We hope you found the story behind Incomedia as inspiring as we did. Their unwavering dedication to innovation and user empowerment has propelled them from a visionary startup to a leading force in multimedia software solutions.
