While season 5 may have left him in a tricky situation at sea, LeVar Burton has a somewhat optimistic response to whether he could make a reappearance in the Community movie. The cult sitcom centering on a community college study group ran for six seasons across NBC and Yahoo! Screen, and a feature-length movie will be released on Peacock. In Community, Burton plays a fictionalized version of himself that is brought to Greendale as part of an elaborate revenge scheme on Troy (Donald Glover), sending the student into an overwhelmed state of shock at meeting his idol.
Though Community‘s long-awaited streaming movie has yet to begin filming, TV Line asked Burton whether he could make an appearance in the feature-length adventure despite him and Troy finding themselves in the custody of pirates in the Gulf of Mexico after he embarked on a journey set by Pierce (Chevy Chase). Burton simply answered by stating “Ask Dan Harmon.“ However, Burton is optimistic about his character’s chances at survival, suggesting that a much-needed update should be given in the movie to address what happened to his character.

One Confirmed Cast Return May Set Up Burton’s Return
Burton’s wish for an update on his Community fate feels like an inevitability, given that his voyage with Troy marked Glover’s exit from the show in season 5. Glover is currently expected to rejoin the cast for the streaming movie, despite reports of a scheduling conflict. Given that Troy was last seen with Burton, a reappearance could be possible.

However, despite his optimism about his chances and Glover’s confirmed involvement, this does not guarantee an actual on-screen appearance. His fate could be addressed through an off-hand reference like Pierce’s allusion to the actor following his season 2 guest appearance.
With his beloved status through Reading Rainbow and Star Trek, Burton is one of Community‘s most fondly remembered guest stars. His effect on a star-struck and anxiety-ridden Troy was a hilarious moment, but his appearance in Glover’s final episode also showed Troy’s growth as a character as he headed off on a new quest.
