Scary Movie 6 is officially confirmed to happen, and, luckily, it has the Wayans brothers back as creators, so now the project only needs one more thing to be a proper reboot. During the peak of the revival of slasher movies in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Wayans brothers – Keenen Ivory, Shawn, and Marlon – decided to give these a comedic twist in the movie simply titled Scary Movie. Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, Scary Movie parodied films and TV shows from the 1990s (mostly horror ones) in a story that follows a group of teenagers who accidentally run a man over.
Cindy (Anna Faris), her boyfriend Bobby (Jon Abrahams), Brenda (Regina Hall), Ray (Shawn Wayans), Greg (Lochlyn Munro), and Buffy (Shannon Elizabeth) dump the body in a lake, promising to never tell anyone. However, a year later, they begin to be haunted by a killer wearing the Ghostface costume. Despite getting mixed reviews from critics, Scary Movie was a huge box-office success, spawning a franchise with four sequels. A sixth Scary Movie entry is now in development with the intention of rebooting the franchise, and it now only needs one more thing for a successful return.

Scary Movie 6 was first announced to be in development in April 2024, with a 2025 projected release date. Scary Movie 6 will be financed by Miramax and distributed by Paramount Pictures, and in October 2024, it was announced that the Wayans brothers are back to develop the project. Keenen Ivory Wayans returned as director for Scary Movie 2, with Marlon and Shawn also returning as writers. In addition to that, Marlon and Shawn reprised their roles as Shorty and Ray, respectively.

Unfortunately, none of the Wayans brothers returned for Scary Movie 3, while Faris and Hall were brought back as Cindy and Brenda. Scary Movie 3 and 4 were directed by David Zucker, while Scary Movie 5 had Malcolm D. Lee as director, and the absence of the Wayans brothers was evident. In 2020, Marlon Wayans explained that he and his brothers were abruptly fired by the Weinsteins, adding that they are still owed a lot of money (via Variety).
Luckily, the Wayans brothers are confirmed to be back to develop Scary Movie 6, which is quite promising for fans of the franchise. Scary Movie 3 and the sequels that followed had a different comedic style than the first two movies, and the sudden absence of Shorty and Ray left many unanswered questions and inconsistencies, mostly in Brenda’s story as she’s Shorty’s sister. There’s no word on whether Shawn and Marlon Wayans will also star in Scary Movie 6 or not, but that’s part of the one thing this reboot is missing.

Scary Movie 6 is described as a reboot of the franchise, and as such, it has better chances of succeeding if it brings back its original main characters: Cindy, Brenda, Shorty, and Ray. Best friends Cindy and Brenda led all Scary Movie films except the fifth one, which had new characters that failed to connect with the audience. As mentioned above, Shorty and Ray’s stories were left incomplete, with both surviving the events of Scary Movie 2 but never mentioned again, not even during Brenda’s funeral in Scary Movie 3.

without explanation.
At the end of Scary Movie 4, Cindy got together with Tom (Craig Bierko) and Brenda had a son with Zoltar the puppet (while still being with Jeremiah), as this was intended to be the end of the franchise. In order to be a proper and successful reboot, in addition to having the Wayans brothers developing the sequel, Scary Movie 6 needs Cindy, Brenda, Shorty, and Ray to address all the loose ends left by the previous movies and also be the hook the audience needs.

In 2022, Anna Faris spoke about the great chemistry between her and Regina Hall and said the latter would be up for a new Scary Movie film “with the right paycheck” (via ET), with Hall later replying that she would love a Scary Movie reunion. In July 2024, in an interview with People, Faris said she would be open to playing Cindy again in Scary Movie 6, but she has two major conditions: money and working with Regina Hall again.
