Anguilla Reaps Unexpected Benefits from the AI Boom

Anguilla, a small British territory in the Caribbean, has found itself profiting from an unexpected source: the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Thanks to its control of the .ai domain, the island has seen a significant boost to its economy, generating around €30 million annually.

The global AI surge, driven by innovations like ChatGPT, has created a frenzy for tech companies to secure web domains ending in .ai. This surge in demand has turned Anguilla’s domain into a valuable asset, helping to fuel its economy.

How Anguilla’s .ai Domain Became a Goldmine

In the 1990s, Anguilla was assigned the .ai domain, one of many top-level domains allocated to countries based on their names. Initially, the .ai extension was intended to reflect Anguilla’s identity, but as AI has become a major industry, the domain has taken on a whole new meaning.

Major companies like Google and Elon Musk’s AI chatbot venture have snapped up .ai domains, with businesses large and small eager to join the trend. This growing interest has caused Anguilla’s revenue from domain registration fees to skyrocket. In 2023, the island earned $32 million (€29 million) from these fees, making up 20% of its government’s revenue—up from just 5% before the AI boom.

Every time a new .ai domain is registered or renewed, Anguilla collects a fee. Expired domains are also resold, with some fetching tens of thousands of dollars.

A Boost to Anguilla’s Economy

This unexpected revenue stream is making a significant impact on Anguilla, a small island with a population of just 16,000. While tourism has long been the island’s economic backbone, it was hit hard by the pandemic and a devastating hurricane. The .ai domain profits provide much-needed financial relief, funding key projects like airport expansion, free healthcare for seniors, and the development of a vocational training center.

Premier Ellis Webster acknowledges the importance of this windfall but remains cautious about relying too heavily on it. He notes that while the revenue is helpful, it’s unpredictable, and Anguilla cannot build its entire economy around the AI boom, as trends in the tech world are always shifting.

Looking Ahead: Doubling Revenue and Ensuring Security

With domain registrations expected to double this year, Anguilla has partnered with US-based company Identity Digital to manage the growing demand. This new deal is set to increase government revenue while enhancing the security and resilience of the .ai domain. Identity Digital will migrate all .ai services to their global servers, improving speed and reducing the risk of cyberattacks or technical disruptions.

Anguilla’s government is optimistic that this partnership will not only keep the .ai domain in good hands but also ensure that it continues to provide valuable income for years to come. As Webster puts it, the revenue offers critical “budget support” for essential projects, including a national fund to aid in hurricane recovery.

An Unexpected AI Hub?

Although Anguilla currently has no major AI industry of its own, Premier Webster hopes that one day the island could become a hub for AI technology. For now, however, the .ai domain remains Anguilla’s connection to the global AI boom—an unexpected stroke of luck that is helping to transform the island’s future.
