Warning: Spoilers for Green Lantern Civil Corps Special #1

An iconic member of DC’s Green Lantern Corps has just returned from the dead – and immediately joined the Sinestro Corps, in a betrayal that has rocked Lantern lore to its core. The Corps has fractured under the tyrannical rule of Lord Premier Thaaros, and that divide runs deeper than ever thanks to a shocking betrayal.

In the preview for Green Lantern Civil Corps Special #1 – written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Jeremy Adams, with art by Salvador Larroca – John Stewart flies around with a construct his Power Ring has created of his sister, Ellie. The two race each other, but their fun is interrupted by the arrival of a face John hadn’t expected to see again.

A yellow blast swiftly sends Green Lantern flying, after being caught by Ellie, John looks on in horror as his attacker turns out to be none other than Kilowog, one of his oldest allies.

Green Lantern #7, Kilowog is seemingly killed in an explosion.

Not only has Kilowog been resurrected, but he’s also wearing the uniform of the Sinestro Corps, and harnessing the power of a Yellow Lantern. Kilowog has traditionally been one of the most loyal Green Lanterns in DC Comics history, so this transformation is a massive upheaval to DC lore that changes everything readers – and the Green Lanterns themselves – thought they knew about this former hero. In the short term, this provides a staggeringly exciting hook for Green Lantern Civil Corps Special #1, while in the longer term, it raises significant questions about Kilowog’s future, and his past.

Green Lantern Kilowog hasn’t been seen since his presumed death in Green Lantern #7 – written by Jeremy Adams, with art by Amancay Nahuelpan – at the start of this year. In that story, Hal Jordan and Kilowog were tasked with accompanying Lord Premier Thaaros to negotiate a treaty with the Sinestro Corps, but the meeting turned out to be a trap. Kilowog fought against the Sinestro Corps and was ultimately caught up in the explosion of their central power battery. Now, it seems the explosion didn’t kill Kilowog after all, and he’s instead made his long-awaited return – except as a Yellow Lanter.

While his friends in the Green Lantern Corps have been mourning him for all this time, Kilowog has shifted allegiances to the Sinestro Corps. According to the solicitation for this special issue, Thaaros has enlisted Kilowog to procure John Stewart’s Dark Star Ring for him. This is a continuation of Thaaros’ plan to wield the entire Emotional Spectrum with one all-powerful Corps ruling over the United Planets. The Dark Star Ring would grant Thaaros godlike power, making him unstoppable; With Kilowog switching sides to aid him in this plot, it’s up to his former Green Lantern allies to stop him.

Kilowog made his first appearance as a Green Lantern in 1986’s Green Lantern Corps #201, and since his debut, he has proven to be a steadfast ally of Earth’s Lanterns. His sudden betrayal uproots decades of friendship with Green Lanterns like Hal Jordan and Jogn Stewart, and their dynamic may never be as it was before. War is brewing in DC’s cosmos as Thaaros makes his first big move against John Stewart. With Kilowog on the opposing side, Green Lantern is about to have a fight unlike any other on his hands.

Green Lantern Civil Corps Special #1 will be available October 9, 2024 from DC Comics.
