The Boys is a pretty gory show, but no character has unintentionally gotten covered in blood as many times as Hughie, and here are all six times that it has happened. Throughout the four seasons of The Boys, Hughie has found himself in all sorts of terrifying situations, with many scenes often involving characters exploding, getting ripped apart, or otherwise dying in an incredibly gory fashion. These frequent deaths have left Hughie covered in blood and guts far more times than any normal person wants to be, with these six The Boys scenes leaving Hughie covered in red.
The Boys season 4 is finally here, with the highly anticipated continuation of Amazon Prime Video’s critically acclaimed superhero series now releasing on the streaming service. The Boys season 4 picks up right where The Boys season 3 left off, with the titular team attempting to kill Victoria Neuman before she is able to become Vice President of the United States, while Butcher attempts to secretly kill Homelander in the background. The Boys season 4, episode 4 sees Hughie get covered in blood once again, bringing the total count of this happening up to six.
6 “The Name Of The Game”
Season 1, Episode 1
The very first time that Hughie gets covered in blood actually happens pretty early in the series, with it occurring in the pilot episode of The Boys. Early in the episode, Hughie is on a date with his girlfriend Robin, with the two standing outside and discussing the possibility of moving in together. Suddenly, Robin explodes, with it being revealed that A-Train was speeding down the sidewalk and ran into her. Hughie is left covered in Robin’s blood and guts and holding her severed hands, kicking off the series with an explosive start.
The image of Hughie being covered in Robin’s blood is an important one, as A-Train’s murder of Robin is the inciting incident of the series. This event is what causes Hughie to meet Butcher and eventually leads to him joining The Boys, killing Translucent, and dedicating his life to fighting against Vought. Much like the rest of the team, Hughie has had a distaste for supes for a long time. However, the fact that A-Train carelessly killed Robin and left Hughie covered in her blood has caused Hughie to especially hate the speedster, leading to a massive rivalry.
Interestingly Hughie and A-Train’s rivalry was finally concluded in season 4, wrapping up The Boys‘ very first storyline after five years. Hughie and A-Train finally got even after Hughie made A-Train steal some Compound V from Homelander’s room, with Hughie promising that their rivalry was over after this act.

Homelander may be the most powerful Supe in The Boys, but there are plenty of characters in the series that have a decent shot at defeating him.
5 “Cherry”
Season 1, Episode 2
After the events of The Boys‘ premiere episode, it wasn’t long before Hughie got covered in blood again, as it happened once more only one episode later. The Boys season 1, episode 2 “Cherry” sees Hughie, Butcher, and the rest of the gang take on Translucent, the member of The Seven who has the power of invisibility. The Boys are stuck attempting to figure out a way to kill the supe, as Translucent has impenetrable skin. The team then decides to put a bomb in his anus, hoping to blow the supe up from the inside.
Although Translucent is caged for most of the episode, he eventually escapes. With Frenchie and Butcher occupied, it is up to Hughie to act, with them activating the remote detonator. This causes Translucent to explode, killing him in a gory fashion. Due to the explosion, Hughie is covered in the blood and guts of Translucent, with this being Hughie’s second blood bath in only two episodes.
Much like the previous instance, Hughie being covered in blood is also a major moment in the overarching story of The Boys here. Killing a member of The Seven is what puts The Boys on the map, but it also gives The Boys the confidence that they need to continue hunting down supes and taking on Vought.
4 “The Big Ride”
Season 2, Episode 1
After season 1, episode 2, Hughie gets a bit of a break from being covered in blood, with him staying dry for the rest of the season. However, The Boys season 2 definitely starts out with a bang, as season 2, episode 1, “The Big Ride” returns Hughie to his pattern of getting accidental blood showers. In the first two seasons of The Boys, the team works with the CIA through a contact named Susan Raynor. In the season 2 premiere, The Boys meet with the agent in order to discuss their next steps, when all of a sudden Raynor’s head randomly explodes.
After Susan Raynor’s head pops, Hughie is left covered in blood, with this surprising everyone on the team. The Boys don’t figure out who was behind the head popping for a long time, but it eventually turns out to be none other than Victoria Neuman. Although Neuman is a villain in The Boys seasons 3 and 4 as well as the spinoff series Gen V, she eventually seemed to be an ally, with Hughie working alongside her as government operatives attempting to put legal restrictions on Vought and its supes.
The Boys season 3, however, saw Hughie discover the true nature of Victoria Neuman. Gen V further delves into the lore of her supe powers, with Gen V retconning Victoria Neuman’s powers and revealing that she is a blood bender like Marie Moreau.
3 “Over The Hills With The Swords Of A Thousand Men”
Season 2, Episode 3
Only two episodes later Hughie once again finds himself caked in blood, although this time it isn’t from a human. The Boys season 2, episode 3, “Over the Hills with the Swords of a Thousand Men” sees Hughie, Butcher, and the gang take to a boat with Kimiko’s brother, with them using the yacht to evade their pursuers as well as The Seven. All of a sudden, however, The Deep appears. In an attempt to redeem himself, The Deep tries to block The Boys’ path with a sperm whale, although it doesn’t turn out too well for the supe.
The Boys decide to ram the yacht into the whale, killing it. When everyone comes to, Hughie is found to be stuck inside the whale carcass, with him being covered in the blood and guts of the whale. Hughie can still be seem wearing the blood of The Deep’s animal helper for a while after getting out of the whale carcass, with the dead sea animal undoubtedly being as upset about the situation as Hughie is.
Although Hughie is covered in blood a lot of times throughout The Boys, this is the only time that the blood in which Hughie is soaked isn’t human. Butcher’s plan to get through the whale had the adverse affect of giving Hughie a bath in whale blood, something which he most likely didn’t appreciate.
2 “Payback”
Season 3, Episode 1
Hughie once again gets a break from being covered in blood, with him remaining comparatively clean for the rest of season 2. It isn’t until The Boys season 3 that Hughie gets covered in blood again, with this occurring in season 3, episode 1, “Payback.” In the episode, Hughie gets wrapped up in something he shouldn’t have been involved in, with it starting with a supe named Tony. Tony comes looking for Victoria Neuman, claiming that her name is Nadia and that they were friends at Vought’s Red River facility. However, Hughie pushes the supe away.
Later in the episode, Tony successfully finds Victoria Neuman, with the two having a conversation in an alley. The conversation quickly turns into a confrontation, with the heated supe asking Victoria Neuman why she hasn’t used her platform to expose Red River. Eventually, Tony’s powers come out as he attempts to attack Victoria Neuman. Neuman, however, isn’t helpless, as she uses her powers to pop Tony’s head, exploding him into a cloud of blood.
Unbeknownst to Victoria Neuman, Hughie witnessed the entire thing, with him having been hiding behind a dumpster. Tony’s blood rains down on Hughie, although he is too shocked by the discovery of Victoria Neuman’s powers to think about the gore.

1 “Wisdom Of The Ages”
Season 4, Episode 4
Hughie has been covered in blood one more time in The Boys, with this occurring in season 4, episode 4, “Wisdom of the Ages.” In the episode, Hughie mostly stays away from the main story of Starlight’s conflict with Firecracker, with him instead going on a side mission with Kimino. Hughie helps fight against a shadowy organization tied to Kimiko’s origins known as the Shining Light, with him getting injured along the way. Hughie is forced to fight against one of the Shining Light’s soldiers, with him surprisingly winning the battle by cutting his throat with a boxcutter.
Although the soldier does die, the method of death causes blood to spew out of his throat, covering Hughie. Hughie then has to spend the rest of his time with Kimiko covered in this blood, a sensation that he has undoubtedly gotten familiar with by now. With a season and a half of The Boys left, it is doubtful that this is the last time that Hughie will be covered in blood, with the series most likely continuing its unfortunate Hughie trend.
