Fla. Supreme Court will decide if a Sarasota County resident was entitled to a full homestead property-tax exemption after renting 2 bedrooms to tenants.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Supreme Court will hear arguments Nov. 3 in a dispute about whether a Sarasota County resident was entitled to a full homestead property-tax exemption after renting two bedrooms to tenants.
The court Monday issued an order scheduling arguments in an appeal by Sarasota County Property Appraiser Bill Furst. The 2nd District Court of Appeal in 2020 rejected a decision by Furst that homeowner Rod Rebholz was entitled to a homestead exemption on only 85 percent of the residence because bedrooms were rented out.
Rebholz filed a lawsuit to challenge the property appraiser’s decision. A Sarasota County circuit judge sided with Rebholz, and the appeals court agreed that the home should not be divided up for tax purposes.
