As a die-hard Wonder Woman fan, I’m always poring over variant covers and comics for fresh cosplay inspiration. Typically, I gravitate towards the classic and modern-day costumes because they capture the spirit of Wonder Woman best, in my opinion. So, imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon a variant cover showcasing the Amazon Princess in a costume that seamlessly blends her iconic original look with contemporary design. It was a cosplay dream come true.
One of the things I’m most excited for this fall (besides Halloween) is the October 30 release of Wonder Woman: Uncovered #1—a one-shot by Ivan Cohen featuring the best and most eye-catching covers that spotlight the Amazon warrior. This book is at the top of my to-buy list, as it will serve as an encyclopedia of cosplay inspiration for me.

Although the contents remain a mystery, a solicitation for the book shared a sneak peek of some of the open-order covers, one of which immediately caught my eye—Wonder Woman wearing star-spangled hot shorts. It was love at first sight.
Wonder Woman’s ‘Hot Shorts’ Design by Jeff Spokes Is Too Good Not to Cosplay
Cover B Jeff Spokes Card Stock Variant for Wonder Woman #6 (2024)
This cover by Jeff Spokes originally appeared as a variant for Wonder Woman #6 (2024) by Tom King and Daniel Sampere. Somehow, I managed to miss it despite being an avid reader, but lady luck was on my side, and this incredible costume came back into my orbit, ready to inspire my next Wonder Woman cosplay. For the most part, Spokes captures the modern-day Diana that fans know and love. However, instead of her gladiator-style skirt, she dons a pair of blue hot shorts decorated with nine white stars in the front—a simple yet impactful design change.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Diana’s gladiator skirt design—it is by far my favorite look for the Amazon Princess. However, I’m also the type of girl who likes to climb, run, and throw a high kick every now and again, activities that are not exactly conducive to wearing a mini-skirt. That’s why it was love at first sight when I saw the hot shorts. They keep the core elements of Diana’s design but offer a practical option that allows me to run wild without worrying about flashing unsuspecting bystanders. The shorts are also a fun and easy way to spice up my cosplays.

Main Cover for Wonder Woman #7 (1943) by Harry G. Peter
Another reason I love Spokes’ variant cover so much is because it reminds me of a modernized version of Wonder Woman’s original costume. Diana first debuted in All Star Comics #8 (1941) wearing a knee-length, star-spangled skirt, but once she got her own comic series in 1942, she traded the skirt for a pair of matching hot shorts. The hot shorts featured in Spokes’ variant for Wonder Woman #6 (2024) aren’t anything new, but he manages to transform them in a way that meets modern-day fashion standards. So, if you see a Wonder Woman cosplayer running around in hot shorts, wave her down—it might just be me.

Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is the superhero identity of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes. As mighty as her fellow heroes Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unmatched in her compassion and virtue.
