There have been at least nineteen murders in Barbados for 2023. January to December 2022 data and analysis can be found here. My analysis is based on media reports only. The steps involved in the following analysis are similar to my 2020 analysis.
Note to Table 1: Data was obtained from reports in the Media and keyed into an Excel sheet for end of month analysis.
37% of all murders took place in St. Michael during 2023.
Note to Table 2: I’ve added per capita by parish values because looking at the absolute value of murders by parish, without taking into consideration the population by parish, is not entirely accurate. For example, although St. Michael generally has the highest number of murders in absolute terms, when we factor in its population size, along with the number of murders and population sizes in other parishes, St. Michael is rarely the highest (one limitation worth noting here is that the population numbers would have changed since 2010).
14, or 77% of the 18 deaths (excluding ‘unknown’), were shooting related.
The average age of victims was 34.1 years old. The eldest victim was 58 (Hendy Greaves, stabbing) while the youngest victim was 16 years old (name not known, stabbing).
Of the 19 victims, 18 (94%) of them were male. The lone female victim, Joel Hope, was stabbed.
Note to Chart 7 – I define the weekend as Friday to Sunday, with the workweek running from Monday to Thursday. Excluding ‘unknown’, 71% of murders took place during the workweek.
Excluding ‘unknown’, 22% of murders happened on a Tuesday during 2023.
Excluding ‘unknown’, 7, or 44% of murders in 2023 took place between 4 PM and 8 PM. The time reported in The Media of the incident is what I use to assign murders to one of six time slots. However, it is important to note that in some cases, this may not be when the victim was attacked (or their time of death). For example, in the case of Trey Akeem Kemar Murray (June 7 2022), The Nation reported that police arrived at the scene at 8:15 PM. As that was the only time mentioned, I used this and assigned it to the “F” period: 8 PM to 12 AM.
