Does Walmart Do Cash Back?

How Much Cash Back Can You Get At Walmart?

How much cash back can you get at Walmart? Between $20 and $100, depending on how you are paying.

If you are paying using a debt card, and you are making a purchase in store from a cashier you can get up to $100 back.

Walmart has a reputation for treating their employees poorly (here, here and here).  So if you don’t want to deal with a surly or disengaged Walmart staffer, getting cash back from an automated kiosk is a good option.  If you are paying using a debt card, and you are making a purchase in store from a self service kiosk, you can also get up to $100 back.

Here is an excellent video explaining how cash back works at the self serve Walmart kiosk.  It is simple and straightforward.

If you are paying via a personal check, the situation is a little different.  The amount of cash back you can get if you are paying using a personal check varies depending on the store, but it is typically between $20 and $40.  Walmart seems more comfortable dealing with personal checks in smaller amounts and seems to prefer giving lower amounts of cash back on personal checks as well.

Cash Back Gets Interesting If You’re Paying On Line

Most of the above assumes you are stopping at a physical store location.  However, if you’re shopping at Walmart.com, you have some attractive cash back options.  And, if you do it right, you should be able to get a lot of cash back at Walmart through combining cash back methods.

First, Use A Cash Back Site.

There are several good cash back websites offering excellent cash back deals at Walmart.   These include:

DollarDig

Rakuten

BeFrugal

Cash back sites work by giving you a percentage of the money you spend back as a rebate. So, for example, if you spend $100 at a store that’s partnered with the cash back site, you’ll get a percentage of that $100 – usually around 1 – 2% – back in the form of a rebate.

The way it usually works is that you create an account with the cash back site and then link your credit or debit card to it. When you make a purchase at a partner store, the cash back site will track it and give you your rebate afterward. It can take anywhere from days to weeks to get your rebate depending on the specific cash back site, so make sure to read their terms and conditions.

Here is an example of what the Dollar Dig partner store looks like for Walmart.

Second, Use A Cash Back Card

Essentially, cash back cards work by giving you a percentage of cash back on every purchase you make. For example, if you have a card that offers 1% cash back, you’ll earn $0.01 back on every dollar you spend. While the cash back rewards may seem small, they can add up quickly if you use your card frequently. And, depending on the card, you may get a higher level of cash back at Walmart.

Some good Walmart cash back cards paying 5% are the Chase Freedom Flex and Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card.

Third, Get Walmart Coupons

Getting coupons is a no brainer and can result in substantial savings.  Because Walmart is one of Americas largest retailers, the company is usually covered by the major coupon sites.  A lot of them have substantial deals, such as $10 off orders of $50 or more, or the like.  Your best bet here is to use a search engine or stop by The Crazy Coupon Lady’s Walmart coupons section.  Coupons.com also generally has good Walmart coupons.

Get Into Cash Back Stacking

It is possible to use various cash back methods in combination at Walmart. This is called “cash back stacking”. The main idea behind this is to use as many cash back methods as possible to get the maximum cash back on your online Walmart purchase.  For example, you can use Dollar Dig to get 4% back, then stack that with a 5% back cash card, plus a 1% coupon for a total of 10% back.   If you’re buying a lot of stuff online, cash back stacking can reduce your bills substantially over the long run.

As a final point, don’t forget to haggle and keep an eye out for discrepancies between Walmart.com and your local Walmart store.  Walmart pretty much price match guarantees its online prices with its in-store prices, so check if you see an in-store discount.  In general, you can always ask for discounts if you are feeling brave. The worse that can happen is they will say no.

So, Does Walmart Do Cash Back?

Yes, most definitely Walmart does cash back.  You can get cash back when you’re buying in a store. You also have plenty of options for getting cash back if you’re buying at Walmart.com including cash back sites, using a cash back card, and stacking your cash back options.
