Presumed Innocent episode 7 brings viewers closer to the truth about Carolyn’s murder but also raises several new questions surrounding who might have killed her. With only one more episode to go, Presumed Innocent episode 7 only further confuses audiences by presenting little to no solid evidence against the primary suspects in its central case. It begins on a high note, confirming that Raymond is still alive after Presumed Innocent episode 6’s ending. However, with what follows, it builds up to an intense courtroom drama that seems to gradually get away from Rusty’s control.
Although Rusty manages to come up with a few fair arguments in his defense in Presumed Innocent‘s episode 7, Molto seemingly stays a step ahead of him. However, just when it looks like Rusty is about to lose, the episode ends with a strange development that could benefit Rusty or worsen things for him. With so many new story progressions in episode 7, the penultimate episode leaves a lot to look forward to.

9 Raymond Survives Bradycardia
Raymond Gets To Leave The Hospital With No Permanent Damage
Even though Raymond falls to the ground in Presumed Innocent episode 6’s ending, a doctor reveals in episode 7’s opening arc that he only has a condition called Bradycardia, which significantly slows down his heart rate. Since he was taken to the hospital on time after the event, he suffered no permanent damage and will be able to leave soon. The doctor also reveals that he will have a pacemaker in his heart to keep his heartbeats in check but does not reveal much about when he will be able to return to court.
Rusty and Raymond’s wife feel relieved that nothing serious happened to Raymond. With what follows, Raymond also watches the court hearings on the television in his hospital room. Towards the end of the episode, he shows up for the trial again, claiming that the doctors cleared him to go.
8 Rusty Decides To Represent Himself
Rusty’s Decision Shocks Everyone
Everyone initially assumes that since Raymond will not be around for the case’s future trials, Winslow will take over as his chief defendant. However, after Raymond’s departure, Rusty feels confident that only he can help himself win the case, and, therefore, takes over as his own chief defendant. When Molto and Guardia attempt to question his decision, Judge Lyttle reminds them that he is well within his rights to do it, but he must keep some caveats in mind before fighting for himself.
7 Judge Lyttle Warns Rusty Not To Give His Account Of The Events
Lyttle Tells Him He Will Have To Stand In The Witness Box If He Defies Her
Before Rusty can represent himself in court, Judge Lyttle reminds him that if he even attempts to present his account of the events in court, he will have to comply with the prosecution and step up for testimony. Rusty agrees, but little does he realize that his plan will backfire against him. Since episode 1, Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent has established Rusty as a short-tempered and passion-driven man who takes a lot of emotionally driven impulsive actions. Owing to this, his decision to fight the case for himself seems like a bad idea to anyone who knows him.

6 Rusty Presents Circumstantial Evidence Against Caroyln’s Son
Rusty Gets A Good Start
When Carolyn’s husband learns about Rusty’s decision, he fears Rusty will call his son, Michael, to testify. His fears come true when Rusty does exactly that. By presenting everything from Michael’s text messages to his secret video recordings of his mother’s home, Rusty tries to establish that Michael and his father hated Carolyn after she left them. He even tries to prove that Michael is envious of him because his mother was giving him more time instead of spending time with her own family.
Rusty also intentionally goes a little overboard with his accusations towards Michael to get his father all riled up. Everything goes as planned when Carolyn’s husband gets aggressive in court and attempts to attack him. Following these events, Guardia fears the trial may not be going in the direction they expected.
5 Guardia Gets Det. Rodriguez To Testify In Court
Molto Does Not Seem Happy With This Decision
Guardia insists that they should get Rodriguez to testify. Molto disagrees, claiming that the detective does not like him. However, Guardia still goes ahead, believing that she does not dislike him as much as she despises Molto. Before questioning Rodriguez about the case, Guardia plays a recording from when she and Rusty visited Reynolds in prison. The recording clearly suggests that Rusty was desperately trying to convince Reynolds to take the blame for Carolyn’s case so that he would be free from the accusations.
Guardia even questions Rodriguez in such a way that her responses make it look like Rusty was trying hard to manipulate the situation in his favor instead of focusing on proving his innocence.
This, for obvious reasons, does not make Rusty look good. Guardia even questions Rodriguez in such a way that her responses make it look like Rusty was trying hard to manipulate the situation in his favor instead of focusing on proving his innocence. Rusty, however, still manages to maintain a solid defense by establishing that he is desperate because he never doubted his own innocence. Rodriguez, too, testifies that even when Rusty was taking desperate measures, he never stepped back from maintaining his innocence.
4 Molto’s Grudges Against Rusty & Carolyn Become More Evident
Molto Holds On To Bitter Feelings Against Rusty & Carolyn
Presumed Innocent‘s episode 7 also presents another flashback, which makes it evident that Molto holds many grudges against Carolyn and Rusty. It shows that even though Molto admired Carolyn, Carolyn never reciprocated his feelings and only viewed him as a colleague. Molto’s unrequited admiration also has seemingly turned into resentment, establishing why he seems so deadset on winning the case against Rusty. His growing bitterness and jealousy towards Rusty and Carolyn make it hard not to wonder if he might have been responsible for Carolyn’s death.

2 Rusty Remains Calm But His Testimony Worsens Things For Him
Molto Doubles Down On His Efforts To Win The Case
Throughout Rusty’s testimony, Molto attempts to agitate him by framing him as a violent person. Rusty, however, follows Winslow’s advice and keeps his composure by maintaining that he was in love with Carolyn and would never hurt her. Molto even presents text messages that show how obsessive Rusty had become before Carolyn’s death. Rusty still defends himself by claiming he was passionate but never violent towards her.
Things take a dire turn for Rusty, however, when Molto shows pictures of him attacking Ratzer. Rusty again tries to explain the situation by recalling how Ratzer was trying to break into his home. Unfortunately, to his dismay, Ratzer’s presence in court establishes that he has a history of violence. To further solidify his claims, Molto even reminds Rusty that he was also previously violent with Kumagai.
1 Someone Leaves The Murder Weapon At Molto’s Home In Presumed Innocent Episode 7’s Ending
The Ending Suggests Molto Might Know Who The Killer Is
In Presumed Innocent episode 7’s closing moments, Molto returns home only to realize someone has broken in. When he goes to his bedroom, he finds a window open, suggesting that someone was in his house moments before he came in. When he looks at a table in his room, he finds a fireplace poker with a message saying, “Go F**k Yourself!“ Given how the fireplace poker was believed to be the murder weapon, it seems like Carolyn’s real killer might have left it there.
The murder weapon was not previously found at the crime scene and could have been a crucial piece of evidence in the case. However, with the weapon now in Molto’s home, there isn’t much the prosecution can do to present it as evidence in court. This also raises the possibility that Molto had hired someone to commit the murder, and the murderer is now turning against him in Presumed Innocent.
Presumed Innocent season 1’s finale will be released on Apple TV+ on July 24.
