Star Wars and Indiana Jones are the two most popular film franchises created by George Lucas, and a startling theory explains how their stories could be connected. Exhausted from Star Wars’ troubled production and worried the movie would be a flop, Lucas went on vacation to Hawaii with his friend and fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg instead of attending the premiere. While there, Lucas pitched his idea for what would eventually become Indiana Jones, and the first movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was released four years later in 1981.
With the same incredible filmmaking and love for adventure serials that permeated the Star Wars original trilogy, it’s easy to understand the fan overlap between both franchises despite the different genres. There have naturally been times when Star Wars referenced Indiana Jones and vice versa, but the world-famous archaeologist may have a more direct connection to the galaxy far, far away (other than sharing a lead actor, of course). By looking at similar terminology in the Star Wars TV shows and the Indiana Jones movies, such a connection does seem possible.
Star Wars Has Teased Indiana Jones Connections Before
As well as connections to Earth
While there has never been definitive confirmation that Star Wars and Indiana Jones take place in the same universe, there have been fun teases over the years. In Raiders of the Lost Ark, a hieroglyph depiction of R2-D2 and C-3PO can be seen when Indiana Jones finds the Ark of the Covenant. Most notably, Star Wars Tales #19 includes a non-canon story called “Into the Great Unknown” by W. Haden Blackman and Sean Murphy. After accidentally traveling at lightspeed to Earth, Han Solo is killed by Native Americans and his body is discovered hundreds of years later by Indiana Jones.

20 Times Star Wars Has Crossed Over With Indiana Jones
Lucasfilm’s Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises both have Easter eggs referencing each other (beyond Harrison Ford’s leading role in both).
Connections between the galaxy far, far away and Earth were also teased in another Steven Spielberg movie. While pretending to be a human child to go trick or treating in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, E.T. sees a kid dressed like Yoda and tries walking toward him as if he recognizes his species. George Lucas doubled down on this joke in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace by having E.T.’s species appear in the Republic Senate. These examples were merely fun easter eggs but demonstrate an underlying attraction to connecting Star Wars and stories set on Earth.
Indiana Jones 4 Introduced Aliens
Or “Interdimensional Beings”
The first three Indiana Jones movies focused on artifacts connected to religion and the supernatural, but Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull decided to introduce science-fiction elements. The crystal skull the Russians are looking for is revealed to be the actual skull of an alien who came to Earth in ancient times, and the humans that worshiped them built a temple around their spaceship. Since the original Indiana Jones films were inspired by the adventure serials of the 1930s, George Lucas thought the sequel should take inspiration from the science fiction B movies of the 1950s.
This too became a fun Star Wars easter egg connecting Lucas’ franchises. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 3, episode 22 “Wookiee Hunt,” the crystal skull can be seen among the many slain creatures in the Trandoshan hunters’ trophy room. Although this seems like nothing more than a reference, it could also be taken as proof that Indiana Jones‘ aliens did in fact come from the Star Wars galaxy. Future Star Wars stories would also provide the perfect means to make this an official connection.
Indiana Jones’ Aliens Went To “The Space Between Spaces”
What did Oxley mean by this?
Rather than being called “space men,”the aliens in Indiana Jones are labeled as “Interdimensional beings.” Instead of going to space, Harold Oxley claims that they have gone to “the space between spaces,” though he doesn’t elaborate on what this means. Steven Spielberg has implied in interviews and behind-the-scenes material that this terminology was done so that the aliens wouldn’t be too sci-fi for Indiana Jones. Even so, this unintentionally created an interesting connection to the Star Wars TV shows that were released after Disney purchased the franchise.
Star Wars Has Introduced “The World Between Worlds”
An awfully similar name and concept
Star Wars Rebels season 4 introduced a place that Ahsoka Tano called a “World Between Worlds,” which connected important moments through the Force. It was a realm that appeared to exist outside space and time, and it contained several portals that someone inside the World Between Worlds could travel through. Ezra Bridger saved Ahsoka’s life by pulling her into the Worlds Between Worlds before Darth Vader could kill her. Ahsoka found herself back inside the World Between Worlds in Ahsoka season 1, where she reunited with the spirit of her old master, Anakin Skywalker.
Perhaps the crystal skull aliens made the World Between Worlds/Space Between Spaces to explore different times and places across the universe, as Indiana Jones noted that they were archaeologists like him.
Since it has only appeared in a few episodes of the Star Wars franchise, little is known about the World Between Worlds’s origin. However, the pathways and portals hint at it being artificially constructed, and comments like “space between spaces” and “a portal, a pathway to another dimension” in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull may reveal the architects. Perhaps the crystal skull aliens made the World Between Worlds/Space Between Spaces to explore different times and places across the universe, as Indiana Jones noted that they were archaeologists like him.
Could The World Between Worlds Connect Two Galaxies?
This theory hinges on the World Between World’s ability to connect two galaxies, even one as “far, far away” as the Milky Way. However, given that Ahsoka season 1 confirmed that the Force exists in other galaxies, it stands to reason that the World Between Worlds can access any time and place. Combined with the more credible Indiana Jones easter eggs, like the crystal skull appearing in The Clone Wars, it seems plausible that these interdimensional beings could travel to Earth from the Star Wars galaxy.

15 Star Wars Actors Who Also Appeared In Indiana Jones
Star Wars and Indiana Jones stemmed from the imagination of George Lucas, leading to several noteworthy actors appearing in both franchises.
Realistically, it’s unlikely that Lucasfilm would approve a canon story that definitively connected these two universes. While Ahsoka season 2 may have the characters return to the Star Wars galaxy by traveling through the World Between Worlds, its origin will likely be left a mystery. It would also make sense to connect the World Between Worlds to the Force gods of Mortis, since their statues appear on Peridea. Either way, the idea of the World Between Worlds being a gateway between Star Wars and Indiana Jones is a fascinating possibility.
