Elden Ring brought forth dozens of new bosses in its Shadow Of The Erdtree expansion, Commander Gaius being one of them. Commander Gaius, the leader of Messmer the Imapler’s army, is a physical damage powerhouse. There are many ways to take him on but to defeat him quickly and decisively; you must be able to take his attacks.
To defeat Commander Gaius, players must navigate through the Shadow Keep Legacy Dungeon until they reach the Shadow Keep, Back Gate Site of Grace. You can make it there by starting from the Church District Entrance Site of Grace and draining the water from the area, opening up a new path into the rest of the dungeon. Take the lift at the end of the hall to the upper floors of the keep, where you will navigate across the rafters until you reach another lift that will bring you down to the back gate.

Best Strategy & Tips
The commander of Messmer’s army in Elden Ring is never without his boar, which he demonstrates to the player by fighting as one with his steed. Fortunately, you have access to Torrent in this battle against Commander Gaius. Fighting on horseback is not a bad tactic, as it provides you with enough speed to match the boss and the ability to reposition faster. While this is not my strategy, if you are confident with your horseback riding skills, I encourage you to give it a shot.
If you decide to fight Commander Gaius on horseback, it is recommended that you use a long-range weapon, such as the
Ripple Crescent Halberd
.
The strategy for a Strength/Faith build is to stack the physical damage resistance of the Opaline Bubbletear and Opaline Hardtear in a Wondrous Physick, as well as the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman, to boost the physical damage resistance by an additional 20%.
This build lets you tank more of Commander Gaius’ attacks, mostly physical hits. Marika’s Hammer, an underrated weapon in Elden Ring, is an excellent primary damage weapon, and using the new Sword of Light as a buff to holy damage is the way to go for this boss fight.

The Mimic Tear is the bread and butter choice for any character, as it will copy your exact build. Other notable options include Black Knife Tiche, who will debuff enemies, and the Dung Eater, one of the highest HP summons.
The Mimic Tear can only have one weapon equipped, so hold the weapon you want it to use upon summoning.
