Most of the money goes toward affordable housing, but it’s also used for other HUD housing programs, such as specific aid for some at-risk populations.
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced $10.3 billion in Fiscal Year 2022 formula grants that will go to communities across the United States.
HUD has a range of programs that cover activities such as affordable housing development, public housing modernization and economic opportunities for people with low and moderate incomes.
“Our local partners will be able to use these resources to boost housing supply, expand economic opportunity, and lift up American families,” says HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge.
The grants announced are distributed through the various HUD programs and administered by the Department’s Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) and Office of Public and Indian Housing (PIH). HUD also has a complete rundown of its funding in Excel format.
Fiscal year 2022 HUD allocations
- Community Development Block Grant (CDBG): $3.3 billion. CDBG provides annual grants to states, cities and counties. The goal is to develop viable urban communities that offer decent housing and a suitable living environment by expanding economic opportunities, mainly for low- and moderate-income residents.
- HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME): $1.5 billion. HOME provides funding for a wide range of activities, including building, buying, and/or rehabilitating affordable housing for rent or homeownership, or providing direct rental assistance to low-income people.
- Housing Trust Fund (HTF): $738 million. HTF provides funding to produce affordable housing units for households with extremely low incomes.
- Housing Opportunities for Persons with HIV/AIDS (HOPWA): $405 million. HOPWA grants provide rental housing assistance and supportive services for persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families.
- Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG): $290 million. ESG provides funds for homeless shelters, assists local shelters and funds social service and homeless prevention programs.
- CDBG Recovery Housing Program (RHP): $25 million. RHP allows states and the District of Columbia to provide stable, transitional housing for individuals recovering from a substance-use disorder.
- CDBG CV-3 Reallocations: $3 million. CDBG Coronavirus (CV) Reallocations fund activities to prevent, prepare for and respond to the coronavirus.
- Capital Fund Program Awards: $3.2 billion. Money goes to 2,813 Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) for the development, financing, and modernization of public housing developments. The PHAs are located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) Formula Allocations: $775 million. IHBG provides funds to 594 eligible tribes for affordable housing activities on reservations, Indian communities and Alaska Native villages. Eligible activities include housing development, housing services to eligible families and individuals, crime prevention and safety, and activities that provide creative approaches to affordable housing problems.
