Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII #3! Together, Deadpool and Wolverine are one of the greatest duos in the history of Marvel Comics, something that’s about to be cemented in live-action with the upcoming MCU film, Deadpool & Wolverine. One of the best parts of their team-ups is the humor, as Deadpool is constantly making jokes while Wolverine grows increasingly annoyed as the mission progresses – which, itself, is hilarious. However, there’s also a much more serious side to the duo than meets the eye, something that’s made clear with the realization of how Deadpool actually sees Wolverine.

In Deadpool & Wolverine: WWIII #3 by Joe Kelly and Adam Kubert, Wolverine is fighting a hulking beast known only as “Snowflake” after it ripped Deadpool (who is currently known as Wade Wilson the 3rd aka WWIII) limb from limb, and crushed what remained into the dirt. Wade is nothing more than a blood stain in the snow after Deadpool’s healing factor was effectively eliminated by a shadowy organization running ‘Weapon X’-like experiments, turning people into living weapons.

As of now, Deadpool is believed to be dead, leaving Wolverine alone in the wilderness with the people who killed him. The leader of this organization named Delta, the one responsible for both creating Snowflake and turning Deadpool into WWIII, uses this opportunity to tell Wolverine exactly what Deadpool thought of him – information he gathered during the experimentation. “Your friend is dead…” said Delta, “you know why. Even through your ample rage… Wade Wilson hoped to emulate your path as a man who conquered his lower nature”.

Despite never being afraid of literally anyone throughout his Marvel Comics career, Deadpool finally names the one villain he’s actually scared of.

Deadpool Wants to Be Like Wolverine for 1 Reason: He Sees Himself as a Monster

A close-up of Deadpool's masked face looking down at the floor, sad.

It’s no secret that Deadpool is overly infatuated with Wolverine, but until now, it was always assumed that the reason why was rooted in Deadpool’s meta awareness. Originally, Deadpool was imagined as an “evil twin,” of sorts, to Wolverine. Wolverine was Weapon X’s perfect specimen, while Deadpool was “all the crap that was left over” – something that was articulated by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld himself. Therefore, it stood to reason that Deadpool naturally wanted to partner up with his better half. However, now it’s confirmed that Deadpool’s reasoning was always far more heartbreaking.

Deadpool sees himself as a monster, someone who succumbed to the heartless experimentation he was put through, becoming a worse man as a result. In contrast, Deadpool sees Wolverine as a man who went through identical experimentation, but came out the other end a hero, not a monstrous killer. Wolverine was able to rise above what happened to him and become an X-Man, and even an Avenger. Deadpool wanted the chance to prove that he could do the same thing if given another chance – to prove, like Wolverine, that he isn’t a monster.

While it’s true that Wolverine did rise above the traumas of his past to become a hero, it’s also true that Wolverine isn’t as “pure of heart” as Deadpool may think. To this day, Wolverine is still “the best there is at what he does,” as he’s always ready to murder his enemies at a moment’s notice. Indeed, that’s how this whole storyline started in the first place, with Wolverine called in to kill a superhuman serial killer in Canada. While his payment is in favors rather than money, Wolverine is still basically an assassin – just like Deadpool.

Delta himself even brings attention to this point when he tells Wolverine what Deadpool really thinks of him, saying that Wade was misguided, as Wolverine is just as much a murderous ‘monster’ as Deadpool. However, regardless of whether Wade is right to think so, Wolverine’s willingness to kill his enemies doesn’t change how Deadpool sees him, and that’s as everything Deadpool wishes he was – which is utterly heartbreaking.
