As Agency Checklists has done for every quarter during the past few years, the following is the latest quarterly run-down of the agency acquisitions reported or announced in Massachusetts as of the 2nd Quarter of 2022 (“Q2-2022”).
For comparison purposes, this listing also includes those insurance agency mergers and acquisitions Agency Checklists previously reported on and published during 2021, 2020, and 2019. Since not every purchase and sale is announced to us, however, this list includes only the transactions that Agency Checklists has been made aware of or that were announced publicly.
The purpose of this compilation is to help our readers take stock of the consolidation of the marketplace both within Massachusetts and New England. As stated in previous versions of this listing, while a couple of years ago, the majority of purchases and sales occurring in our region involved locally owned and operated agencies there are now many more national buyers entering this marketplace such as Acrisure, Hub, Alera Group, The Hilb Group, and World Insurance Associates, to name a few.
While many national firms have begun acquiring here, it should also be noted that many of our region’s largest agencies, such as Salem Five, Eastern Insurance, Kaplansky Insurance, and Cross Insurance also continue to acquire agencies as they expand their geographic footprint throughout Massachusetts, New England, and even New York.

Based on our data for 2022, here is a snapshot of the trends in insurance agency acquisitions in Massachusetts:
- In Q2-2022, Agency Checklists reported a total of 12 agency acquisitions throughout New England, with seven occurring in Massachusetts. The other five transactions involved agencies based in Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.
- In total, there have been 21 agency acquisition announcements thus far in 2022. The busiest month of the year thus far for acquisitions was May, with six agency acquisitions reported.
- Cross Insurance has been the biggest acquirer in the region thus far this year, with four agency acquisition announcements, two in Massachusetts and two in Connecticut, and all coincidentally completed in May.
- While a substantial number of transactions have occurred this year, the number is almost half of the 31 reported transactions during the first two quarters of 2021.
