Is the Stock Market Open on New Year's Day 2023?

New York has earned its name as the city that never sleeps, and that hardly changes around the holidays. Thousands of people line the streets around Times Square to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve. However, what do the holidays mean for the stock markets? While many of us are enjoying the festivities, many investors are marking the beginning of the new fiscal quarter. So if you’re wondering, “Is the stock market open on New Year’s Day 2023?”, the answer is a little different this year.

New Year’s Day 2023

This year, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day fall on the weekend when people generally have the day off from work. But as a federally recognized holiday, workers are still guaranteed a day off during the business week. While it may be inconvenient for some, it provides a good opportunity to reflect on the last year and set goals for the one ahead. Since you don’t have to work,  take time off from trading to think about what you hope to achieve in the coming year. And what better way than to spend quality time with family and friends before you jump back into the daily grind?

With Christmas and New Year’s Day exactly a week apart, it’s easier to remember the holiday schedules. However, it can be a little more difficult when the holiday falls on a Sunday. In observance of the day, the stock and bond markets close the Monday following. Therefore, the markets will be closed on both New Year’s Day and Monday, January 2.

However, the bond market will also close early on Friday, December 30 as well. The markets will close one hour earlier at 2:00 p.m. EST, allowing people more time to prepare for ringing in 2023.
