Is The Stock Market Open on New Year’s Eve 2022?

Is the stock market open on New Year's Eve?

New Year’s Eve is right around the corner, which means there’s not much time left for end-of-year money moves like tax-loss harvesting. If you still have some trades you need to make before 2022 is over, you may be wondering, is the stock market open on New Year’s Eve? Here’s the full scoop.

Is The Stock Market Open on New Year’s Eve?

New Year’s Eve falls on a Saturday this year, which complicates the stock market’s holiday schedule somewhat. Because the stock and bond markets are closed on weekends anyway, holidays that occur over the weekend are typically observed on a weekday instead. This ensures that stockbrokers get a true day off to enjoy the holiday with their families.

When Are Holidays That Fall on a Weekend Observed?

When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the stock and bond markets celebrate it on the preceding Friday. Holidays that occur on a Sunday are observed on the subsequent Monday. That means New Year’s Eve will be celebrated by the stock and bond markets on Friday, December 30th, 2022.

Like many businesses, the stock market doesn’t close or change its hours at all for NYE. So you’ll be able to trade as normal from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 30th. This gives you plenty of time to complete those last-minute financial transactions.

Unfortunately, the bond market follows a different holiday schedule—it usually closes early in observance of NYE. That means you’ll have to wrap up your end-of-year trades by 2 p.m. on December 30th, so plan accordingly!

Is The Stock Market Closed on New Year’s Day?

New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, so the stock and bond markets will be closed for the weekend as normal. Then they’ll observe the holiday on Monday, January 2nd since it fell on a weekend.

Both the stock and bond markets shut their doors in observance of New Year’s Day, so they’ll be closed on January 2nd. This means you won’t be able to make your first trades of 2023 until Tuesday, January 3rd.

Stock Market Holiday Schedule

Since you’re wondering is the stock market open on New Year’s Eve, you may be curious to know the stock market’s full holiday schedule. The stock market usually closes for 10 holidays throughout the year, including:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

The bond market follows the same holiday schedule above, but adds two extra holidays: Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Veterans Day. Plus, it closes early at 2 p.m. on a few occasions throughout the year, such as Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and of course, New Year’s Eve.

Are you planning to make any last-minute trades on NYE to lower your tax bill? Or are you going to wrap up your end-of-year financial transactions earlier so you can focus on ringing in 2023 with family and friends? Let us know in the comments section below!
