Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Mayor of Kingstown season 3, episode 3!
Summary
- Jeremy Renner’s return to
Mayor of Kingstown
for season 4 depends on his character’s fate and the story being told in future episodes. - Mike McLusky holds the show together with his role as a liaison between law enforcement and criminal organizations.
- The series would be less focused and confusing without Renner as the lead, nor would it prove as engaging because of how memorable his character is.
Jeremy Renner has addressed the possibility of his return to Mayor of Kingstown after season 3, hinting at what the future of the series could involve. The actor portrays the show’s main character, Mike McLusky, who acts as a liaison between law enforcement and criminals in the fictional Kingstown, Michigan. Mayor of Kingstown season 3 has seen him face new dangers, with the arrival of Russian mobster Konstantin outside the prison, and the Aryan leader Merle inside the prison.
Speaking with Collider, Renner explained whether he would come back as Mike if Mayor of Kingstown were ever renewed for season 4. The actor explained it would all depend on his character’s fate in the show, but that he’d be willing to return if there’s more story to tell. Check out what Renner had to say below:
I have to make it through Season 3 first. We’ll see if I do. I’ve enjoyed being with this character and exploring, and I always think there’s more to explore. When the world is set up so beautifully, like it is in
Mayor of Kingstown
, and all the chess pieces are there, every time you play chess, it’s a new game. It’s like that with this [show]. For the audience, they just get more involved and invested in the characters, just as I do. I’ve only seen the first episode, so I’m excited to see the rest of the season. I don’t know half the things. I only focused on my part.
Why Jeremy Renner Needs To Return If Mayor Of Kingstown Season 4 Happens
Renner’s Mike McLusky Literally Holds The Show Together
Mike is busier than ever before in season 3 of the show, having to deal with new threats while also keeping balance between cops and crooks that are already native to his hometown. The latest episode saw three police cars get blown up in the police department’s parking lot, indicating the Russians have decided war is the best course of action right now. This event teases why Mayor of Kingstown season 3’s positive reviews indicate how action-packed it is, something that will seemingly continue as new episodes arrive.
However, Renner’s performance as the show’s lead is a major reason for its success, as every storyline is somehow tied to his role as the Mayor. Without his character around to anchor the many conflicts throughout the show, the series would feel much less focused and more confusing. This is especially true because of his status as a liaison, something that helps the story connect all its moving parts more easily. If he wasn’t in such a role, then what makes the show stand out would be nullified.

Mayor Of Kingstown’s Season 4 Future Gets Encouraging Update From Creator (Including When Show Could End)
EXCLUSIVE: Mayor Of Kingstown creator Hugh Dillon offers an encouraging update about season 4 and hints at when the show might someday end.
While it’s possible the story could make his brother, Kyle (Taylor Handley) the new Mayor should Renner decide to depart, the story wouldn’t be the same with someone else in the role. The current star brings a certain energy to the lead role that’s hard to replicate, making him the only person who can truly encompass it. Although Mayor of Kingstown season 4 could happen without him depending on how the current storyline shapes up, it would be disappointing for his time on the show to end without the series itself closing out.
