John Wick’s Caine Spinoff Gets Promising Progress Update

John Wick‘s Caine spinoff movie, which will star Donnie Yen, receives a positive update from franchise co-creator and director Chad Stahelski. The franchise began life with 2014’s action-revenge sleeper hit John Wick, which starred Keanu Reeves as the titular assassin. The film grossed almost $90 million worldwide, and spawned three direct sequels, with the most recent, John Wick: Chapter 4, featuring Yen’s Caine, a skilled blind assassin. A Caine spinoff was officially announced in May of this year.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski opens up about the future of the John Wick franchise and gives an update on the Caine spinoff movie. With the Under the High Table series already in development, he also confirmed writing on the Caine movie is underway. Check out Stahelski’s comments below:

These are all going on at the same time. The Donnie Yen feature, we’re building it right now. We’re in the middle of writing it right now.

What This Means For The Future Of The John Wick Franchise

Further Spinoffs Seem Likely At This Point

The franchise is showing no signs of slowing down, with Stahelski refusing to rule out the possibility of John Wick 5. However, as the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4 brought a natural conclusion to the series, it feels more likely spinoffs will be the way forward. One is already in the works, Ballerina, which is slated for a 2025 release. Additionally, the prequel limited series The Continental aired on Peacock in 2023. However, the Caine movie can be the first spinoff focused on an established franchise character, and this could see it generate plenty of interest from audiences.

The
John Wick
franchise has grossed over $1 billion worldwide to date.

John Wick: Chapter 4 was the highest-grossing installment of the franchise, so the appetite for stories in this world seems to be greater than ever. A Caine movie will be an interesting adaptation, and though it is likely to focus on Caine in the present day, there is almost certainly going to be some backstory about his early years as an assassin. With writing actively taking place now, a script could be locked in within the next few months, and filming can take place next year.

Our Take On The Caine Spinoff Movie

This Could Just Be The Beginning For Caine

The popularity and interest surrounding the character of Caine bodes well for the success of the spinoff, and I think there’s a good chance the movie could pick up from the John Wick 4 post-credits scene, which showed Akira ready to seek revenge on Caine. There’s every chance this movie could be a one-and-done bookend to Caine’s story, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the infamous assassin show up in future installments. It is an exciting time for the franchise, and a Caine movie promises to fill a gap for audiences craving more John Wick.
