The Justice Society’s Place In DC History Is Assured
The Justice Society Brought the Concept of “Legacy” to the DC Universe
Their arrival led to a seismic shift in the comics landscape, as the concept of a superhero team was born. The JSA paved the way for the Justice League, the Avengers and all other teams that followed.
The Justice Society were trailblazers. By the early 1940s, DC Comics had an extensive stable of characters, all starring in their own solo adventures. DC editor Sheldon Mayer and legendary writer Gardner Fox came up with the idea to bring them all together, into one team, and thus the Justice Society was born. Their arrival led to a seismic shift in the comics landscape, as the concept of a superhero team was born. The JSA paved the way for the Justice League, the Avengers and all other teams that followed.
The JSA’s earliest stories merely consisted of them sitting around a table relating their latest adventures. They did not fight villains as a team until later.
Since its introduction, the Justice Society has developed into a legacy team. The Society has become multi-generational, and the advanced art sent out by DC confirms this. Alan Scott Green Lantern is fighting alongside his two children: Jade and Obsidian. Hourman is a member, but which incarnation was not specified. The original Doctor Mid-Nite was a member of the Society, and the new version is carrying this legacy into a new era. Many of the Society’s children, such as Jade and Hourman, were a part of Infinity Inc, and elements of that team are returning as well.
The JSA’s Children Will Carry On Their Legacies
Jade, Obsidian and Hourman Are the Futre of the JSA
Jeff Lemire and Diego Olortegui will give their own spin on this idea of legacy in their new JSA title. The addition of the Infinity Inc. members will allow Lemire and Olortegui to explore this idea further. Jade, Obsidian and the rest are now adults themselves. Their joining the Justice Society ensures they will carry on their proud work of their parents, and keep the Society’s good name alive. The Justice Society was the inspiration for the Justice League and every other superhero team. They will return later this year with an awesome new lineup, keeping the team’s spirit alive.
