KBP Brands Adds KFC, Sonic Units, Plus More Bold Deals | Franchise Mergers and Acquisitions



KBP Brands added 28 KFCs to its portfolio in North Carolina from Scottish Food Systems, and it bought 13 more from Cary, North Carolina-based Luihn VantEdge Partners. 

KBP Brands also acquired 85 Sonic restaurants in Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The purchase brings KBP’s restaurant portfolio, which includes KFC, Taco Bell and Arby’s, to more than 1,000 restaurants in 32 states and is expected to increase annual company revenue to more than $1.5 billion. KBP employs more than 21,000 workers in its restaurants and Kansas City-area headquarters. Mark Everett, the executive vice president of KBP, will lead operations and growth for KBP’s Sonic locations.

Syacamore Partners acquired Playa Bowls from Tamarix Equity Partners. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sycamore Partners is a New York-based private equity firm with more than $10 billion in committed capital since its inception in 2011. The firm’s portfolio includes Express, Hot Topic, Staples, The Limited and Ann Taylor Loft. North Point served as the financial advisor to Playa Bowls for the transaction, with legal counsel provided by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and Ice Miller. Acai-focused concept Playa Bowls has 250 U.S. locations.

Thrive Restaurant Group acquired Denver-based Modern Market Eatery. Modern Market has restaurants in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Texas, with licensed locations in Colorado, Georgia, Indiana and Massachusetts. Thrive has been a franchisee of Modern Market since 2022 and is also a large Applebee’s operator. Modern Market was founded in 2009 by Anthony Pigliacampo and Rob McColgan. Robin Robison, Modern Market’s chief operating officer, will take over as president of the brand. The acquisition expands Thrive’s Modern Market holdings into seven states with 24 restaurants and five licensed locations. Thrive Restaurant Group joined the Modern Market system via the purchase of three stores in Austin, Texas. It later built two new units in the Kansas City area. 

Flynn Group acquired 83 Wendy’s restaurants in New Jersey and Pennsylvania to bring the company’s domestic portfolio in the brand to 277 restaurants. The acquisition comes on the heels of Flynn’s international investments in Australia and New Zealand. The group is now the sole franchisee for Wendy’s in both countries. Flynn Group owns and operates more than 2,900 Applebee’s, Arby’s, Taco Bell, Panera, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s and Planet Fitness locations in 44 states, Australia and New Zealand that generate $5 billion in sales annually. 

MC Pizza, led by Chester Ison and Marcus Tincher, purchased the company-owned Toppers Pizza location in Janesville, Wisconsin. The acquisition increases MC’s portfolio to four locations in the state. It plans to open another store in Beloit, Wisconsin. MC Pizza previously acquired three company-owned Toppers in March in Menomonee Falls, Fox Point and Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Founded in 1991, Toppers has 70 locations. 

MVP Realty Associates founder and CEO Derek Carlson bought 10 Realty One Group offices in Florida. Realty One has more than 400 franchised offices nationwide. MVP launched in 2014 and has 22 offices across Florida.

Caring Transitions of the Chippewa Valley in northwest Wisconsin is now owned by Erin Swoboda and Caring Transitions Chicago Northwest Suburbs is now owned by Deepti Shah. Founded in 2006, Caring Transitions has more than 325 franchise locations across the country. It provides clients with supportive moves, auctions, rightsizing and transitions. 

PCRK Group, a portfolio company of Trivest Partners and Three20 Group, acquired 35 Massage Envy locations in Texas and one in New Mexico. The Phoenix-based group is the largest franchisee in the Massage Envy system with 131 locations in 13 states. Todd Recknagel and Kristi Mailloux serve as co-CEOs of PCRK and managing partners of Three20, which also operates Sola Salons and Office Pride.

Daisy acquired smart home franchise SaaviHome. Denver-based SaaviHome brings Daisy’s portfolio to 10 locations. SaaviHome CEO Gavin Lantzy spent the last three years revving up the company to franchise.

Kristi Silva, the owner of four Spherion Staffing and Recruiting locations in New England, took ownership of the Spherion office in Worcester, Massachusetts, from Brian Palaia. 

Hercules Press in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, which has been operating for 51 years, was sold by retiring second-generation owner Michael Macrides to Michael Campagnone. 

ARCpoint Labs is joining CRESSO Brands, a multi-brand health and wellness platform and the owners of Any Lab Test Now. ARCpoint is the first franchise system to join CRESSO Brands. It specializes in drug testing, background checks, fingerprinting and offering Employee Assistance Programs, while Any Lab Test Now offers consumers direct access to thousands of lab tests, such as general health and wellness, paternity and HIV/STD testing. ARCpoint Labs was founded in 1998 and has been in the drug and alcohol testing business for over 20 years with more than 130 locations in 29 states. 

LBA Hospitality and real estate developer 3H Group acquired the Hyatt Place Tampa Airport/Westshore hotel. Founded in 1973, Dothan, Alabama-based LBA Hospitality specializes in hotel management, development and consulting. Headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 3H Group has partnered with Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG and StayAPT. 

Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Northwest Home Team, with offices in Tumwater, Yelm and Chehalis, Washington, acquired 253 Realty in Tacoma to expand the firm’s service area and market share in Pierce County. Shawn Viguerie founded 253 Realty in 2013. Founded by Steve and Jessica Poulos in 2015, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Northwest Home Team serves the South Puget Sound area, focusing on Thurston, Pierce, Lewis, Mason and Grays Harbor counties.
