Mike Flanagan’s fan-favorite horror movie Hush, which disappeared from Netflix, is arriving online again at the perfect time for fans of the director. Over the decades, many gained attention for their incredible horror movies including Eli Roth, Adam Green, and Jordan Peele. However, few are as iconic and pervasive as Mike Flanagan, who has won many awards, including the 2021 Visionary Award at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Horror Films, USA.
While critics and audiences have praised many of Flanagan’s projects, one of the most celebrated is the movie Hush. The film follows a deaf and mute horror author named Maddie Young, who goes to a cabin to write and gets targeted by a masked killer. Hush holds an impressive 93% Rotten Tomatoes score; however, it’s been unavailable to audiences in the past year. Luckily, audiences are regaining access to this film just in time for another significant Flanagan release.

Mike Flanagan’s 2016 Movie Hush Is Getting Its First-Ever Digital Release In August 2024
Hush Is Expected To Be Available On All VOD Platforms
Because Netflix snatched up the movie prior to its debuted, Hush was only ever available for streaming on one website. Due to exclusivity, the film couldn’t be streamed anywhere else. It also wasn’t available as Video On Demand (VOD) for purchase or rental, which is relatively rare for a project not made by the streaming platform. This made it devastating when the movie disappeared from Netflix in April 2023. Luckily, on July 19, Shout! Studios announced the movie is getting its first-ever digital release at the perfect time for Mike Flanagan fans.
Mike Flanagan’s early masterpiece will be more accessible than ever before, opening it up to a new audience.
Intrepid, Blumhouse, and Mike Flanagan signed a distribution agreement with Shout! Studios, allowing them to finally set an official VOD release date for Hush – August 27, 2024. Additionally, when Flanagan spoke at the ATX Television Festival in Austin in 2024, he teased that the movie would also get its first-ever physical release as well (via MovieWeb). Based on this information, Mike Flanagan’s early masterpiece will be more accessible than ever before, opening it up to a new audience.
Hush Is Coming To Digital Platforms The Month Before Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck Premiere
Hush Will Increase Excitement For The Life Of Chuck
The start of Autumn will be an exciting time for Mike Flanagan horror and drama fans. His hit horror movie Hush will finally be released on VOD for the first time eight years after the film’s debut at South by Southwest and on Netflix. Additionally, while there isn’t an official release date or a distributor attached to the movie, The Life of Chuck is expected to come out in September 2024, only one month after the digital release of the beloved Flanagan movie.
For those unfamiliar with the eponymous Stephen King novella, The Life of Chuck tells the story of a man named Charles Kranz, with the narrative running in reverse from his death from a brain tumor to his childhood in a haunted house. The cast includes big-name actors like Tom Hiddleston, Karen Gillian, and Mark Hamill. This isn’t the first time Mike Flanagan has adapted Stephen King’s work, which brings a lot of excitement. The release of Hush will only add more hype for Flanagan’s new movie.

It’s worth noting that The Life of Chuck is a supernatural drama, not a horror/slasher film like Hush. However, seeing drastically different films back-to-back can be beneficial. By pairing these movies together, viewers can see the versatility of Mike Flanagan’s directing abilities and how his signature style appears in vastly different stories.
Why Hush Was Removed From Netflix In 2023 & Unavailable To Stream Or Rent After
The “Netflix Original” Label On Licensed Content Has Caused Confusion
Hush’s removal from Netflix caused confusion among Mike Flanagan because people mistakenly believed it was a Netflix Original movie. After all, the movie had only ever appeared on the streaming site. However, Hush was actually created by Intrepid Pictures and Blumhouse Productions and had no connection to the media company. Netflix Originals are either produced or commissioned by the streaming site, and they own 100% of the rights. Instead, Hush was technically Netflix-exclusive licensed content. Some licensed content is still marked Netflix Originals even though it’s not, which is where the confusion comes from.

Mike Flanagan’s New Book Adaptation Can Revive A 42-Year-Old Stephen King Movie Tradition
Mike Flanagan’s next project, The Life of Chuck, is the perfect chance to revive an old Stephen King tradition and break another trend.
The film was set to make its worldwide debut at the film festival South by Southwest, but two days before the movie was shown for the first time, Variety announced that Netflix purchased the streaming rights. However, the streaming giant only had a seven-year distribution license. As such, Hush went off the website in April 2023. The movie presumably didn’t move to another streaming platform because another streaming platform didn’t buy the rights; however, that’s just an educated guess based on Mike Flanagan’s comments about the lost horror movie getting a new home.
Despite the disappointment that Hush is no longer available on the streaming platform, we can credit Mike Flanagan’s positive relationship with Netflix to this film. Flanagan has gone on to make seven TV shows and movies with Netflix, many of which have ranked among the best TV horror miniseries according to IMDB. Hopefully, the Netflix Flananverse will continue over the years.
