Minecraft Movie Clip Shows Jack Black’s Steve Teaching How To Craft In Video Game World

Jack Black’s adventurer Steve teaches Jason Momoa’s Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison and Sebastian Eugene Hansen’s Henry the basics of how to craft in a new A Minecraft Movie clip. Jared Hess’ upcoming film, set in the realm of the hit Mojang sandbox video game, sees four troubled strangers transported to the game’s Overworld setting, leading to them teaming up with the veteran adventurer. The Minecraft Movie‘s cast also stars Danielle Brooks and Emma Myers as two other adventurers dragged into the world alongside Garrett and Henry.

After the first trailer prompted divided discussions from fans of the game upon release, a new Minecraft Movie clip has been released as part of Minecraft Live 2024 on the official Minecraft YouTube channel. Taking Garrett and Henry into his lair, Steve introduces the pair to a crafting table, showing them how to create a sword in order to defend themselves in the Overworld.

Though Steve hoped to guide the pair in how to survive and thrive in this new realm, Garrett is over-confident and sets out to upstage Black’s character by creating a sword without following the same steps. However, after a mishap when trying to create his own blade leads to him creating buckets, it becomes clear that the pair still have much to learn about their new setting. What A Minecraft Movie’s New Clip Reveals About The Adaptation

The Movie’s Core Cast Are Slowly Being Defined

From the new clip, viewers have been given their best glimpse at the dynamics between a handful of the cast members in A Minecraft Movie. While Steve carries on from his trailer introduction as the wise and experienced mentor figure who could help the new explorers survive, Momoa’s Garrett is clearly set up to be a character who will try to rival the veteran, while Henry is the young, wide-eyed adventurer in need of guidance.

What remains to be seen is how Emma Myers’ Natalie and Danielle Brooks’ Dawn will interact with their fellow adventurers, as the initial trailer only showed their disbelief at their situation. Meanwhile, Jennifer Coolidge, Matt Berry, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement’s roles have yet to be revealed, leaving it unclear whether they are providing voice roles or portraying characters on-screen.

Our Thoughts On A Minecraft Movie’s New Clip

Could In-Game Faithfulness Appeal To Existing Fans?

With A Minecraft Movie’s first clip, several pieces of worldbuilding have been revealed to audiences beyond just certain character traits and dynamics. The new clip has further showcased the movie Overworld’s blend of traditionally blocky Minecraft elements with more realistic traits, from the real-world flames burning on candelabras and torches faithful to the game’s shape, to how the iconic pixelated sword is rendered with more traditional bladed angles.

Despite this, it is clear the movie will also be careful to stay within the game world’s traditional rules, such as how the items both Steve and Garrett crafted follow their in-game recipes. That being said, considering how heated longtime franchise fans have been since the first trailer, A Minecraft Movie may have an early struggle at the box office if it doesn’t deliver a faithful and entertaining approach to its iconic namesake video game.
