New The Rings Of Power Season 2 Trailer Makes A Sauron Plot Hole Much Harder To Avoid

Summary

  • Celebrimbor’s failure to recognize Sauron in The Rings of Power season 2 creates a baffling plot hole.
  • The show’s major book change that Sauron first appeared as Halbrand means Celebrimbor should know what Sauron looks like.
  • The Rings of Power season 2 could explain Sauron’s deceit of Celebrimbor via illusions, yet the plot hole remains.

The new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 makes a Sauron plot hole look all the more baffling. As is usually the case in the final weekend of July, San Diego Comic-Con 2024’s movie and TV trailers are being released in full force. Thankfully, Screen Rant is present and waiting to deliver all the updates necessary from SDCC 2024, including those pertaining to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2.

In The Rings of Power season 1’s ending, Halbrand revealed himself as Sauron after attempting to manipulate Celebrimbor and Galadriel. The Rings of Power season 2’s trailer promises to build on this, with Sauron unleashing the next stage of his plan. The villain is now taking on the form of Annatar from J.R.R Tolkien’s original books, once again attempting to worm his way into Celebrimbor’s trust. In the new trailer for The Rings of Power season 2 released at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, this was highlighted, worsening a plot hole regarding the iconic villain.

There’s No Way Celebrimbor Wouldn’t Recognize Sauron In The Rings Of Power Season 2

Celebrimbor Knows What Halbrand/Sauron Looks Like In The Rings Of Power

In the trailer for The Rings of Power season 2, Celebrimbor is shown coming face to face with Sauron/Annatar. After the events of The Rings of Power season 1, this makes little sense as Celebrimbor should recognize Annatar. Celebrimbor met Halbrand in the first season and was fully aware of his deception as the Dark Lord, with actor Charlie Vickers continuing into The Rings of Power season 2’s cast as Halbrand.

Based solely on the reveals from Comic-Con 2024 about
The Rings of Power
, it is illogical that Celebrimbor does not recognize Sauron’s deceit…

While Vickers admittedly looks different as Annatar, it is still obvious to viewers that he is Sauron. As such, it should also be evident to someone as intelligent as Celebrimbor that Annatar is Halbrand, and thus, Sauron. It is worth noting that The Rings of Power season 2 could detail a story point that allows Sauron to deceive Celebrimbor once more, such as a powerful illusion that is not highlighted in the trailer. However, based solely on the reveals from Comic-Con 2024 about The Rings of Power, it is illogical that Celebrimbor does not recognize Sauron’s deceit.

The Rings Of Power’s Book Changes Have Created An Unavoidable Plot Hole

The Biggest Change From Tolkien’s Works In Season 1 Caused This Plot Hole

Sauron disguised as Halbrand looking upset next to Sauron disguised as Annatar looking confident in The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power season 2.

Although most of the book changes in The Rings of Power season 1 were versed in sound reasoning, the biggest is the cause of this Celebrimbor-Sauron plot hole. In the books, Sauron never took the form of Halbrand, with the character being an original creation for the Amazon Prime Video show. Instead, Sauron first appeared to Celebrimbor in his Annatar form, offering gifts, knowledge, and insight into the crafting of powerful rings.

This explains how Celebrimbor was so easily manipulated by Sauron, as the latter appeared as a benevolent being who fed the former’s ego of creating great power. However, The Rings of Power‘s major book change involving Halbrand means that Celebrimbor knows Sauron is making his move and, more importantly, what he looks like. With that in mind, the plot hole of Celebrimbor not recognizing Sauron as Annatar is unavoidable unless The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 comes up with a strong way to explain this when the season releases on August 29.
