Amazon Prime Gaming subscribers have already been treated this July as the service has handed out plenty of games in the build-up to Prime Day, but the next batch of free titles includes one of 2024’s biggest releases. When it comes to recent video game launches, 2024 has been stacked with some heavy hitters that have taken the industry by storm. Yet one of the year’s most high-profile releases proved especially divisive amongst fans and critics alike and while audiences waited for it to arrive for many years, it didn’t match up to most players’ expectations.
Prime Gaming announced that subscribers will be able to download and keep Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League from July 16 but they’ll need to pick it up sharpish because the deal won’t last forever. Rocksteady’s live-service shooter is joined by beloved medieval multiplayer brawler Chivalry II and Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration rounds out the package for those who prefer single-player experiences. The service has been handing out bundles of games over the last couple of weeks but Suicide Squad is undoubtedly its biggest offering yet given that the game is only a few months old.

Despite Rocksteady’s reputation for delivering stellar single-player superhero games, Kill the Justice League fought an uphill battle ever since its official announcement in 2020. When it was confirmed that the game would be a live-service looter-shooter starring the titular team of anti-heroes, many instantly wrote it off as a cash grab pushed by publisher Warner Bros. Interactive. After several years of delays and redesigns prompted by negative feedback from audiences, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League debuted in on January 30, 2024, with very little fanfare.
The game was blasted by fans and critics for its repetitive mission design and pointless loot system that served as a way to incentivize players to spend more time in-game with little to show for it. The launch was plagued by server issues and while Rocksteady promised players more content, the developer’s post-launch updates have similarly been criticized for adding little in the way of interesting content. Kill the Justice League is on the cusp of its second season but at the time of writing, its active player base is less than 500 users on Steam.
While Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League may have been a failure to many fans, it’s worth noting that Amazon Prime Gaming subscribers can at least give it a try without paying for it. While the gameplay is dull and uninspired, the animation, voice acting, and general presentation are all fantastic and could make for a fun few hours of shooting aliens. If there’s no price tag, there’s no reason to not at least take it for a test drive.
