Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming drama Joy. The film is based on the true story of Louise Joy Brown, the first “test-tube baby,” and will aim to tell the story of the pioneers who made it happen. Directed by Ben Taylor, the film boasts an impressive cast that includes Thomasin McKenzie (The Power of the Dog) as Jean Purdy, James Norton (Black Mirror) as Robert Edwards, and Oscar-nominated actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually) as Patrick Steptoe.
Now, Netflix has released the trailer for Joy. The trailer offers glimpses of an incredible journey and advancement in science, as McKenzie’s Jean teams up with Robert and Patrick to make their dreams and the wishes of their patients come true. The heart of the story, however, seems to be Jean, as she has one of the best quotes in the trailer, saying, “Women presume we can have children. There is a biological and social expectation. Nothing can make that absence worse. But we have the possibility of making it better.” Check out the full trailer below:
Why Netflix’s New Joy Movie Is Very Important & Inspiring
Joy Shows The Challenges In Researching IVF.
One in six individuals experience infertility worldwide. A moment in the trailer speaks to this number, where a man says that infertility only affects a small number of women. Jean replies to the dismissive statement with incredulity. Throughout the trailer, there are many moments of Jean fighting for the voice of those who have difficulty conceiving children, teasing a heartfelt, important story told within Joy. Her involvement is even more crucial as she appears to be the only female researcher on the team.
While no public record states that Jean Purdy herself had any personal experience with infertility, her desire to help couples having trouble with conception is admirable and inspiring, hinting that she has a personal connection to the topic. This admiration doubles when considering the opposition she, Robert, and Patrick face as they do their research, facing backlash from concerned citizens who dub Robert as a modern Dr. Frankenstein, and with Jean facing the lack of support from her own mother.
Our Take On The Joy Trailer
There Are Hopes Of It Becoming A Good Netflix Movie.
Netflix films are either a hit or miss, ranging from spectacular films like Society of the Snow, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio — all of them received Oscar nominations — to movies that become easily forgotten and lost in the shuffle of the convoluted stock of streamer flicks. It’s impossible to tell which category Joy will fall into with just one trailer. But, considering how important the story is and the likability of its hardworking characters, I hope that the 2024 Netflix movie at least makes waves upon its release and serve as a worthy exhibition of its cast’s talent, especially McKenzie.
Joy will be released on November 22, 2024 on Netflix.
