The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise came so close to having a real-life married couple among its cast at the same time. Over five movies, this Disney franchise has included a wide range of actors, some of which became regulars while others appeared in only a single film. Had one particular character returned for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the actor who portrayed her could have been on screen with her husband. Unfortunately, this didn’t come to be.
The first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies featured the same basic cast, with Johnny Depp starring as Jack Sparrow and Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom playing Elizabeth Swann and William Turner, respectively. However, the fourth movie, Pirates of the Caribbean : On Stranger Tides, took a fresh new direction, with Depp being the only primary cast member to return. He was joined by Penélope Cruz, who played the mischievous Angelica. Unfortunately, she didn’t return for the next film, which is a real shame since her husband played the primary villain.
Real-Life Couple Penélope Cruz & Javier Bardem Appeared In Consecutive Pirates Of The Caribbean Movies
Penélope Cruz & Javier Bardem Have Been Married Since 2010
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales again took a new angle, bringing in new characters while featuring cameos from the original cast. Actor Javier Bardem, Cruz’s husband since 2010, played the villainous Captain Salazar, the cursed spirit of a man with a serious grudge against Jack Sparrow. This, of course, came after Cruz’s time with the franchise, so the married duo, who have done a handful of films together in the past, both have Pirates of the Caribbean movies on their resume—just not the same one.

Penélope Cruz Could Have Returned For Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 (& Appeared With Bardem)
Angelica Was Set Up To Return
It would have been fun if Cruz’s Angelica had returned for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 to appear alongside her husband Bardem. She might have been a fun villain herself, turning to the spirit of Salazar to get even with Jack after he tricked her into killing her father, Black Beard. The post-credits scene of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 implied that Angelica would return, but it seems that Disney decided to go in a different direction. In doing so, these married Pirates stars missed out on participating in this franchise at the same time.
Though their two characters have, as far as we know, nothing to do with one another, it would be entertaining for the
Pirates of the Caribbean
franchise to find a way to get them on screen at the same time.
Of course, Pirates of the Caribbean isn’t over, and Disney has multiple new projects in the works. It’s possible that one of these would seek to bring back some of the stars who had appeared in previous films, including Cruz and Bardem. Though their two characters have, as far as we know, nothing to do with one another, it would be entertaining for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to find a way to get them on screen at the same time. Of course, only time will tell if this wish ever becomes a reality.
