Prison TV Series With 95% On Rotten Tomatoes Needs A Revival Way More Than Prison Break

Wentworth deserves a modern revival more than other similar shows like Prison Break. Wentworth was an extremely popular Australian TV show until it ended in 2021. Set in a woman’s prison in Melbourne, the series followed the lives and drama of the prisoners during their prison sentences. The show was a modern re-make of the Australian soap opera, Prisoner: Cell Block H. Despite the show being extremely popular around the world, it was canceled in 2021 after nine seasons and 100 episodes. Even today, the Australian show (currently on Netflix) remains popular with audiences.

When the show ended, it was left open with the possibility of a reboot or a spin-off, and it’s clear that this needs to happen. There is still so much story to be told in Wentworth and new characters that could be added to the mix. There is still a demand for the show in the world. The great thing about a prison-set TV show like Wentworth is that the main character is the prison itself. This means that the show could be revived at any time, bringing back fan-favorites alongside new characters and stories that could reflect changing times.

The Show Was Originally Supposed To End After Season 7

Wentworth deserves a continuation of some sort, whether that be a reboot or revival. The series was initially supposed to end after its seventh season. Announcements had been made, with an ending to the show even being filmed. However, there was such an outrage from viewers that the show was saved and given season eight and nine to conclude everything. Originally, Frankie and Bridget were supposed to return for the final episode of season seven, alongside cameos from the cast of the original Prisoner: Cell Block H. Although these scenes were filmed, the footage was never released to the public.

The show needed to come up with an alternative ending that would allow the show to continue past its ninth season. This led to the decision to bring back Joan “The Freak” Fergerson, the greatest villain of the whole show. This scene was filmed so secretly and at the last minute that extras in the scene were played by members of the crew. Even the main cast wasn’t aware of the big reveal until they watched it on TV, and it gave audiences exactly what they wanted from the series. This ensured Wentworth continued on for another season before concluding.

Wentworth Is Perfectly Set For A Continuation Story

A Lot Of Storylines Were Left Open For A Possible Return

Joan Wentworth Season 9

When the final season of Wentworth ended in 2021, it didn’t feel like a final goodbye. The episode ended feeling rushed, as viewers discovered Ally was still alive. On top of this, Lou Kelly was still in custody. This meant that without a protection unit, she would be out and free to roam the prison block, causing even more trouble for the rest of the inmates than usual. Boomer was also still locked up for the mercy killing of Liz that occurred at the end of season 7.

Although the stories with Lou and Boomer in prison would be interesting to see, one of the most important things that happened at the end of season 9 was Joan Ferguson’s escape. There were originally plans for a spin-off starring Joan Ferguson outside the prison limits. However, plans for that expansion were scrapped. This means there is still a lot more story to tell about what comes next for Joan, revealing if she will ever get caught and sent back to Wentworth Correctional Facility. Beyond that lingering plot thread, there are several stories left open from season 9 that need to be told.
