Handling mold outbreaks to leaks to worst-case scenario situations, demand continues to drive growth for disaster restoration franchises. With $7.3 billion in sales for 2022, the segment shows no signs of slowing down. Largely unaffected by the pandemic, all brands on the Franchise Times Top 400 grew sales last year, with the segment overall up 9.8 percent.
The annual ranking lists the largest U.S.-based franchise systems by global systemwide sales.
The biggest grower this year was No. 278 CRDN. Its systemwide sales were up 33.5 percent, to $157 million, and the brand ended 2022 with 146 units and jumped nearly 50 spots on the list.
No. 192 PuroClean was up 27.3 percent, with total sales of $314 million in sales. It has 437 global units and continues to expand.
“If you have an accident, you take yourself to the ER.,” said Steve White, PuroClean’s president and chief operations officer. “Well, you can’t take your home or office to anywhere, so we come out and we rescue people in difficult situations.”
No. 71 Paul Davis Restoration was also one of the top three growers, with a staggering $1.2 billion in sales after growth of 11.8 percent last year. This brought the brand into the top 100. All three top performers pointed to strong partnerships with insurance agencies as the leading marketing vector, bringing their services when and where they’re most needed.
It’s not just the big growers, though. Every disaster restoration brand performed well in 2022, with No. 274 Restoration 1 seeing sales growth of 7.1 percent, to $160 million. No. 212 Rainbow International saw $269 million in sales, 5.9 percent growth over 2021. Finally, No. 60 ServiceMaster Restore (not to be confused with ServiceMaster Clean) saw 5.8 percent sales growth, ending 2022 with $1.2 billion in sales.
Taking care of “the everyday loss,” disaster restoration brands are more than just a business in many cases, said White. Franchisees and their employees are meeting people in stressful situations, so they need to tread carefully and help property owners in more ways than one.
