When it comes to entrepreneurial resources, FranNet of DFW & Oklahoma isn’t the only game in town. Though if you’re interested in franchising your way to business ownership, it most certainly is. But for the entrepreneurial-minded, there are also many other organizations, outlets, and resources you should also know about. You never know when you might need additional advice, direction, support, or value-added resources that could end up being the missing piece of the puzzle you need to become your own boss.

DFW-Area SBDC Offices
Dallas, Tarrant, and Collin County all have representation in a nationwide network of Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs). These SBDC offices offer individuals free one-on-one consultations with experienced small business experts—including both of us here at FranNet of DFW & Oklahoma. While some programs are paid, these centers maintain various programs that help individuals learn all aspects of launching a business of their own. Individuals can also access multiple training programs, such as low-cost workshops, seminars, and value-added courses geared to meet the needs of new small business owners.
SCORE Offices
There are hundreds of SCORE offices in the U.S. This is a nationwide network of affiliated nonprofit organizations that provide free, confidential advice to entrepreneurs and small business owners. This is another organization where FranNet of DFW & Oklahoma contributes from time to time. The programs offered by SCORE are essentially mentoring opportunities where you’ll be matched up with a mentor who can advise you on your entrepreneurial efforts. They also offer low-cost workshops in affiliation with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). There are SCORE offices in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Oklahoma City, as well as multiple satellite offices in each location.
The Dallas Entrepreneur Center (DEC)
Another nonprofit organization dedicated to helping new small business owners is the Dallas Entrepreneur Center (DEC). In addition to their Dallas HQ, the DEC maintains multiple innovation hubs across the DFW Metroplex. The DEC offers networking, connections, and collaborations though various educational events. The Sparkyard (Fort Worth)
Fort Worth has a unique entrepreneurial resource known as the Sparkyard. It’s a collaboration between the University of North Texas, the city of Fort Worth, and TCU, where a team of local experts helps entrepreneurs find resources, solve problems, and serve as an advocate and mentor for future small business owners. OKC Innovation District
Last but not least, Oklahoma City has a vibrant and growing startup scene and the OK Innovation District is a central clearinghouse of information and resources for all of your entrepreneurial needs. See what events are on tap by following this link.
The aforementioned organizations are the primary resource centers for entrepreneurs in North Texas and Oklahoma, but the full network of other entities runs quite deep in all three areas. To become your own boss takes a personal commitment, but also help from others. You may find that networking is the most valuable asset to claim and any of the resources above should provide you with plenty of contacts to cultivate.
