David Duchovny is still thinking about his character’s future in The X-Files. Duchovny played Fox Mulder, the FBI Special Agent who served alongside Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully. The two navigated the world of the supernatural in their original show from 1992 to 2003, as well as in two movies and a series revival from 2016 to 2018. The show was so popular that it spawned two spin-offs, Millenium and The Lone Gunmen. The only major issue for the series was with behind-the-scenes tension between Duchovny and Anderson.

It has been six years since the revival ended, and Duchovny still loves Mulder and the rest of the show. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Duchovny revealed that he would love to see Mulder’s future. He believes that an X-Files revival could suit the 2020s as well as it did the 1990s, but he does not spend much of his time pondering its direction. Check out his full quote below:


I don’t wake up and wonder, “Where is the
X-Files
stock today?” But I love that show. I don’t know what my character would be like at my age. It’s an interesting question. That show can address the present as well as it addressed the ’90s. It just depends on Chris [Carter] or the other writers. I’m always like, “Hey, let’s see.”

The future of X-Files might be uncertain, but a revival would not be the first instance of the show returning after an ending. In 2016, Fox released a six-episode X-Files miniseries, which also served as season 10 and takes place after The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008). It led to the 10-episode season 11, but the show never continued on after that, as Gillian Anderson elected to retire from the franchise. Without his partner, Duchovny had few options for continuing the show, and it promptly came to an end once again.

It would be difficult to revive the universe without bringing Anderson back as Scully. The dynamic between the two Special Agents is what makes the show so compelling, as one served as the believer and one as the skeptical agent shying away from the supernatural. That dynamic was shattered in season 7, after Scully admitted the existence of aliens, but it was a long development that made them more interesting partners. If Anderson does not return, Duchovny will have little reason to. A revival would need both actors.


There is the chance for a reboot, however. The show’s popularity continues today, and a reboot is currently in development. Duchovny spoke to Screen Rant about the reboot and wished nothing but luck to the actors, as Disney asked for his “blessing” before proceeding with the show. If it does succeed and brings life back to the franchise, there will always be opportunities for cameo appearances and flash-forwards that can reveal exactly what happened to Duchovny’s Mulder in the years since The X-Files ended.
