Today’s Connections puzzle has quite an assortment of different words, and this always makes the puzzle harder to solve. However, some clues can make this a little easier if you know what to look for. Below we have a plethora of hints to help you solve today’s puzzle.
If you like Connections, check out the NYT Spelling Bee puzzle that allows you to make words out of very cute honeycombs. This will test your knowledge of the dictionary, as you have to come up with words of a certain length as opposed to shorter words. This can make it much more difficult to come up with a wider variety of words, but you will want to do your best to get the highest score possible.

COVER WITH A THICK LAYER |

---|---|---|---|
CAKE |
COAT |
PLASTER |
SMEAR |
Personally, I feel like all of these words are more different than the category suggests. I do not PLASTER my wall the same way I’d COAT a cake with icing. Even then, I would not CAKE on makeup the same way eyeliner can get SMEARed. It’s just not the same. However, they do have a similar vibe of covering something else, and I can see why they are all in this category, even if I’m skeptical about it.

THINGS THAT ARE INFLATED |

---|---|---|---|
BALLOON |
BASKETBALL |
FLOATIE |
TIRE |
I think what threw me off the scent of this category was TIRE weirdly enough. I got stuck on it being a wheel as opposed to being inflatable. I think if I had thought of it more as a bike TIRE I would have seen its connection to FLOATIE and BALLOON. BASKETBALL is also an interesting part of this, perhaps because sports balls and tires are not inflated as often as the other two are.

KINDS OF CHARTS |

---|---|---|---|
BUBBLE |
BAR |
LINE |
PIE |
I am absolutely a sucker for a good chart, and I grew up making all kinds of charts in my elementary reading class to diagram various stories. In fact, I got so detailed about these BUBBLE and LINE charts that my teacher actually had to tell me to stop.
We didn’t make as many BAR and PIE charts, but given my tendency to overdo it, it’s probably for the best. At least it paid off with my job as a writer now and helped me get through multiple graduate degrees.

CLASSIC COCKTAIL TYPES |
|||
---|---|---|---|
FIZZ |
PUNCH |
SLING |
SOUR |
Alas, my lack of fancy beverage knowledge struck again as I could not figure out what the fourth word was. I had a pretty strong idea that FIZZ, PUNCH, and SOUR went together, but figuring out the last one was much harder. Perhaps I should pay more attention to cocktail menus from now on, as that appears to be an ongoing theme in these puzzles now.
