PEN |
RULER |
SCISSORS |
TAPE |
Over most of my primary years, I spent the vast majority of time walking dewey-eyed through rows and rows of school supplies, very carefully picking out the ones I wanted most. Perhaps that is why this category was almost instinctive to guess for me. All of these words went very well together, it was mostly a matter of determining if STAPLE fit into this category or another one.

FUNDAMENTAL |

ESSENTIAL |
KEY |
PRINCIPAL |
STAPLE |
Where STAPLE really belonged, this category is all about the important words, or the words meaning something is important. ESSENTIAL and KEY worked very well together, and STAPLE was likely to belong here once we ruled it out of the first category. PRINCIPAL could have also gone with the school theme or perhaps even the next category, but it was the only word left that meant anything like fundamental, although the -PLE spelling might have made the most sense here.

PASS could also have a school-themed meaning as it can refer to something like a bathroom or library pass for students. However, when viewed in context with these four words it makes the most sense that it would have this transference meaning instead. Nothing else really had that meaning in any of the categories, so this one was fairly easy to put together.

Most people are likely going to have these words left over and are likely unsure how they are related when they put them in as a guess. I was not sure myself, until I sent it through and my results screen came up. However, these are all signs that usually come backlit when installed to make them easier to see. Unfortunately, they did not have the same kind of attention-grabbing mechanics in this puzzle.
