Organizing the words into the correct categories of Connections can be difficult, the words chosen are meant to throw you off the scent of the real answers. This can be difficult to make the right choices, and you will need to examine all the possibilities before picking one. However, sometimes a group of four will stand out and you will be rewarded for noticing, so it’s worth keeping in mind that your instincts can be correct.
Another game that will take a combination of logic and instinct is the NYT Wordle puzzle which still has a long list of five-letter words not used. Wordle will test your patience and your critical thinking skills as you attempt to figure out which letters go in which boxes. Understanding the formula is key, just as it is in Connections.

Today’s Connections Category Hints
JULY 21 #405
Today’s puzzle can be a little tricky, as it uses a variety of words that are at least in some form or fashion nouns. This can make it hard to form distinctions between the various categories. To get you started, here are four hints as to what the categories might be:
- One category has to do with politics
- One category has to do with how something is made
- One category is about a profession
- One category is about how we use numbers
If that does not quite get you there, we have every category listed below, as well as all the answers you need in the next section:

CANVASS |
ORGANIZE |
STUMP |
This one was a little tricky at first. STUMP is not a common word used to talk about supporting various candidates, at least not compared to the other choices. Additionally, ORGANIZE could go with a few other words in this puzzle, most notably STRUCTURE.
CANVASS is more obvious but it could be confused with its near cousin, canvas, which could put it with FABRIC. CAMPAIGN was the biggest clue and the most obvious choice for this one. However, we feel that there are easier categories than this one today, at least for those not always active in campaigning.

COMPOSITION |
FABRIC |
MAKEUP |
STRUCTURE |
This one felt a little easier, at least in theory. STRUCTURE and FABRIC are both a little tricky for the reasons listed above, but seeing COMPOSITION gave us a big clue. There weren’t many other words with similar meanings, and MAKEUP had nothing else to go with, except maybe TAN.
There were very few connections beyond that that seemed obvious, so working with those two words brought us to FABRIC and STRUCTURE. ORGANIZE got cut based on it being one of the few words in today’s puzzle that was more obviously meant to be a verb.

SAW |
This one actually felt the easiest to us, although FILE could fit in with STRUCTURE and ORGANIZE, seeing it with SAW and CLAMP made it feel more obvious to us. Perhaps it helped that our grandpa was a woodworker and used most of these tools almost every day of his life. So we may have cheated, but beating the LEVEL still felt good.

LOG |

TAN |
This one was harder to figure out since we have not taken a math class in a very long time now, and LOG and TAN both seemed like they could fit in with other words to form different categories. However, if we had remembered more of our trigonometry this could have been much easier. Perhaps if we had dusted off that scientific calculator that is now buried in a desk drawer somewhere, we might have made the connection sooner.
