Getting the ace in the hole for today’s Connections puzzle is a little more challenging due to a fair amount of crossover words. These are words that could be in several different categories and often waste your possible guesses. We have hints at every level to help you overcome those challenges, as there are hints at what the categories are, the category names, and full spoilers below.
If you are looking for a different puzzle, try the NYT’s Tiles game, which asks you to make matches based on the images in the puzzle. It is a bit like deconstructing a mosaic, as opposed to putting one together. This makes Tiles and Vertex opposites of each other, in a way. Playing both will keep your mind active and your chances of success on at least one of them higher.

Today’s Connections Category Hints
July 29 #413
There are a few words that cross over and could make things harder for you to finish the puzzle successfully. To avoid that, we have some hints for you:
- One category is about sports
- One category is not about bowling
- One category is not about ocean animals
- One category is about things that all have a similar feature
With those hints in mind, you can attempt to categorize the words on your own, or you can continue scrolling to get the category names and the answers for them later:

Sports are the talk of the town as the Olympics start, and the names of all of the various sports stadiums are listed here. It is nice to see a slightly theme-based puzzle today. Beyond that, knowing these terms will be useful as the Olympics get into full swing, and we can watch the fight for gold, silver, and bronze take place. Get ready to cheer for your favorite athlete and enjoy the spectacle while you can.

ALLEY and COURT both feel like words that could go with BOWL and GUTTER to be a category all about bowling. While that would give me late-90s and early-2000s nostalgia, particularly concerning every birthday party ever that was not at a skating rink, it is not today’s category. It is instead about much more boring street names that are used to differentiate roads from each other. Perhaps one day there will be a bowling category.

SOLFEGE |
This one was the last category I put together and was frankly lucky that it was. I had no idea why they went together when I got to it, but it does make sense now. SOLFEGE, as it turns out, is the term for scales in music that 12 years of playing clarinet never taught me. It did make me think about the Aristocats, and despite the problems it now has from a modern lens, I do still love the song about scales and arpeggios.

WHALE |
I got fairly lucky with this one too. I had a good idea that FOUNTAIN, GUTTER, and TEAPOT went together after solving the first two categories. However, I did not exactly why other than they all sounded like they might have to do with pouring liquid, and it turns out I was close to right. I had no reason to guess WHALE at the time, but my instinct told me it was likely WHALE over anything else, so I managed to get it right despite the odds.
