Summary

  • Gladiator 2 features two emperors, Caracalla and Geta, reflecting real Roman history.
  • The 2024 sequel is set in a reimagined Roman history, like the original movie.
  • Despite inaccuracies, some aspects of Gladiator 2 are based on real events.

Gladiator 2 is set to delve back into a reimagined version of Roman history – much like the original movie – yet unlike Ridley Scott’s celebrated 2000 Best Picture-winner, the 2024 sequel is set to feature two emperors, rather than one. While this might seem strange, there is a good reason for this.

Two decades, after his hugely successful sword-and-sandal epic, Gladiator 2 sees Ridley Scott return to Ancient Rome, once again playing fast and loose with history. However, while several details are inaccurate, some aspects – including the role of the movie’s two emperors, is based in reality.

Even though it might seem like an overly complicated narrative device, the real reason Gladiator 2 has two emperors is because it’s a reflection of what happened in real Roman history. Both Caracalla and Geta ruled Rome after original Gladiator antagonist Commodus in the early 200s. As such, Gladiator 2 is surprisingly historically accurate.
