What is “Selling Season” and Why are Franchise Owners So Excited?

Are you familiar with the term, “Selling Season?” In general, it typically refers to holiday shopping – a period of frantic retail-based sales often responsible for lifting the fortunes (and bottom lines) of companies across the U.S. As you may know, Christmas is a time of giving and shoppers tend to push the envelope further each and every year, creating an economic uptick at the close of the calendar year – just when many companies need a final boost to help their 2022 numbers.

But as FranNet of DFW & Oklahoma knows – for many franchise owners who operate retail-based outlets, it can also be a welcome boost. So, let’s take a closer look at “Selling Season,” and why this year’s predictions have retail-based franchise owners excited about its possibilities.

Yes, “Selling Season” is a Thing

While most people are aware that holiday shopping is prevalent and a big boost for retailers, just how much of an impact they have might surprise you. For instance, there may be 365 days in a year, but the 10 busiest shopping days in the calendar all occur in a single, 30-day window! That’s why the time between Nov. 26 (Small Business Saturday!) and Dec. 26 is known as “Selling Season.” And Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday – all crowded into one, jam-packed kickoff weekend – herald the advent of this annual shopping bonanza.

Predictions for a Big Year

Sources from the National Retail Federation to the private accounting giant, Deloitte, are predicting a banner year for sales during the 2022 Selling Season. Straight retail sales are predicted to rise anywhere from 4-8% over last year’s totals, amounting to more than $950 billion. The outlook for online retail sales is even brighter, predicted to rise as much as 12-14% over 2021 totals. If true, these predictions paint a rosy picture for retailers – and this is despite the ongoing pressure of rising inflation. At the time of this writing, one result is already available – Black Friday sales hit a new record of $9.2 billion in just one day!

Retail-Based Franchisees Stand to Benefit

It’s estimated that one in every five franchise establishments is a retail-based operation, which means for 20% of all franchisees, the month of December is critically important to their annual success. The latest numbers from the IFA reveal that retail-oriented franchises are doing quite well. Over 165,000 of them nationwide will be participating in this year’s “Selling Season,” a sector of franchising that’s growing at an annual rate of 2.1%. The National Retail Federation states that as much as 40% of U.S. retail sales can be traced back to franchise establishments.

If you’ve been thinking of an entrepreneurial future, or are in the midst of considering a career transition, there are dozens and dozens of retail-oriented franchise concepts for you to review. From Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More to the iconic retail brand, Red Wing Shoes (and boots, y’all!), there’s a lot to like about this particular franchising sector.
