He has always worn number 69 on the back of both his referee uniform and hockey jersey, but neither typically includes his last name, much less his first. Interestingly, this is not the first time that Jared Keeso has committed to a bit like this. Throughout the episode, Shoresy’s family never uses his real first name, and instead refers to him as “Waffles.” His siblings began calling him Waffles as a child, as a result of him being both overweight and a terrible athlete. It’s important to note that Shoresy’s last name isn’t actually Shoresy; it’s Shore, but was adapted to Shoresy due to many hockey nicknames ending with a “-y” sound. As is the case with everyone else in his life, even Shoresy’s family doesn’t actually use his first name.

Part of what made Shoresy so entertaining during his run on Letterkenny was the fact that his face was never shown. Earlier in the show, Shoresy was often hidden in a bathroom stall as he harassed Reilly and Jonesy, and as his role gradually expanded they came up with new and more inventive ways to hide his face. The general understanding was that it was a tongue-in-cheek device to prevent the audience from seeing that Wayne and Shoresy were played by the same actor, show creator Jared Keeso.

Over time however, it grew into part of Shoresy’s charm and the mystique surrounding him. The audience knew that he was a very talented hockey player, relentlessly mean, and seemed to be desirable to women. Shoresy provided the opportunity for Keeso to really expand upon the character and infuse a surprising amount of heart into his story.
